Barbara Maxwell Psychologist RN.,Ph.D
Dr. Maxwell is extremely knowledgeable. She offered specific suggestions to begin the important behavioral changes needed to help insure my success. Her recomendation that I see an eating disorder specialist to address compulsive eating was truly a blessing. It led me to a wonderful counselor and support group in Prescott. I now feel prepared for my 3/26/03 surgery date.
I felt rushed through a series of very personal questions and snapped at my responses. She seemed to lack compassion, seemed condescending and stated matter-of-factly "I don't send binge-eaters or depressed people into the operating room" (Which probably rules out MOST bariatric surgery patients) She recommended therapy (which I am okay with) but I got the impression she simply didnt like me or my personal views on psychotherapy. I hope I am wrong. I also felt testing costs were a rip-off. They billed my insurance company for 5 or so hours of testing where I simply sat in a room filling out paperwork at something like 100.00 per hour. I have no problem with the charges for her time, but felt the testing costs were exhorbitant and excessive. I wished I knew about them before hand. Noone explained that to me. They just said pay her $190.00 up front and I may or may not get a refund, depending on what my insurance company pays. Sounds hokey to me, however, we're at their mercy, arent we?
Not required by my insurance - required by surgeon. $925 to tell me that I need to modify my behavior toward food after surgery -- which I already knew and had been implemented the last 4 months. The exam was a standard 900 True or False -- asking have you ever been sexually abused, did your mother/father love you, drug & alcohol abuse, YADA YADA YADA.
I had done a bit of research on this site (more like reading comments) and after that, it seemed as though many see the "eval" as just a money thing and a waste of time. I disagree - I truly think the information this professional provided me will aid in my success after the surgery...she talked about me like she knew me (thru tests, she did) and told me where to expect pitfalls and specifically how to deal with those issues. She had good advice/suggestions and gave me a plan to take away...sort of a script for a "post-op dress rehersal", if you will. I have already begun to do the things suggested and I'm glad I went...this was helpful AND enjoyable.
