I am very impressed with Dr. Schirmer. He took his time with me, answered all my questions. His office is doing all the leg work with my insurance company, so all I have to worry about is completing the tests needed for approval.rnrnI like the fact that the UVA team will be following up with me at least once a year for the rest of my life. It's nice to know that what I am doing now will, one day in the future, help other people have safer WLS.rnrnThe only negative thing I can say about my experience was that we were there from 8 am until after 2 pm. However, we got a lot accomplished in that amount of time. Lab work was completed, a class about the different weight loss surgeries, and consults with a dietician, surgeon, and the insurance man (he who saves me much trouble).

Dr. Schirmer took plenty of time to answer any questions for me. He seems like he really cares for his patiets. The classes before the initial consult are very informative and interesting.

A good place to be if you are sick; especially if you need the most advanced medical knowledge there is.

Dr. Schirmer is a good surgeon. It is my understanding that he has performed the Gastric Bypass procedure a\" hundred times\" UVA is a \"teaching facility\" so there were lots of interns/residents coming and going. But I found them to be respectful and sensitive people. The Staff in his office are also good people, especially his nurse, Anna who has been with him for over 15 years. I have begun seeing him again for the routine follow ups I should have been involved with all along. I also see a Nutritionist in his office. My experience with this surgeon and his office staff has been positive and I would recommend him.

Dr. Schirmer is a great surgeon. His bed side manners are soft spoken and caring. He took the time to answer all of my questions, and he made sure that I understood everything prior to surgery.rnHe is one definetly one of the best in his field.

My first impression of Dr.schirmer was that he was a very good doctor, knew what he was talking about and encouraged me to ask any question that i might have he said that is what he was there for at that stage of the consult, i feel like i have made a very good choice, and so dose he in wanting me to get this done before i had any major problems and complications so in short i feel good about my choice, his office staff is one of the best at UVA and anna miller is just wonderful.

I was generally pleased with everything up until Sunday because the nurse on the morning shift that day acted like I was not even there and more over I felt that she didn't want to have to deal with me. I told her I would like to take a shower when she was not busy and she completely ignored me and didn't even check to see if I was okay, if I had fallen or anything. I didn't bring shampoo or soap with me (big mistake) and I had to get the secretary to get me some so I could take a shower because as usual my nurse was ignoring me. Other than that one nurse and the complication - I was very happy and I am very happy that is over.

My consultation with Dr. Hallowell back at the end of February went well. Actually my appt. was scheduled for March but the office called me with a cancellation.
It's hard to get a take on a person from one meeting but I'm hoping Dr. H will have a great bedside manner.
The office staff, namely Carol has been very helpful along with the other nursing staff, they were quite efficient sending in my paperwork to Qualchoice once I had given them everything from my end.

This is a recent change due to new insurance going into effect on January 1, 2006. I have not scheduled the consultation yet and as we all know things can change in an instant but for the moment this is my choice of surgeon because he is highly recommended and he accepts my insurance.

I met with Dr. Kellum and due to a series of circumstances I am changing back to Dr. Schirmer mostly for locational purposes.
