San Joaquin Community Hospital Hospital
The beginning process, like preregistration etc, was fine. Check in the morning of surgery was fine. The nurses and staff were wonderful. Then after awaking from surgery and being put it my room it was a nightmare. You caouldn't sleep because your IV machine would be beeping because it needed something for 45 minutes or longer(most the time you had to call them to the room) I would ask for pain meds and would either have to wait an hour or ask over and over or not get them at all, WHICH YES did happen. I kept having to tell them what the next step was. My 3rd day in hospital I was still getting ice chips, I had to tell them I was supposed to be on clear liquids. Had to fight to get them to take the catheder out. They never came and unplugged me to walk. I figured out how to unplug my IV machine walked by myself(after OPEN RNY) and then when I got back to my room I plugged it back in and started it up. CRAZY HUH. I have had 2 other in patient procedures (Both Open) and they were great experiences. But this experience would make me learry of having surgery again. I DEFINATELY would not go to San Joaquin EVER AGAIN.
My main complaint was the noise level by the staff. At night, the staff talked and laughed as loud as they wanted. When they moved equipment around, they could of cared less how much noise they created. The day staff, were excellent. There were a few times that I had to wait for pain meds, (one time I had to wait for almost an hour to get a demerol shot). For the most part, the nurses took very good care of me.
I'm sure this happens in every hospital, so I would recommend this hospital for WLS patients.
The care I recieved from day one was excellent. The nurses and care partners where excellent with the exception of a couple (Of CNA's) who were pretty lazy and had to be asked for things repeatedly before they would get it done. The newly refurbished bariatrics wing is very nice, except the rooms are very small and there is no room for chairs or recliners so you are pretty much stuck in bed the entire stay and that gets really uncomfortable. As with all hospitals it was really noisy at night so close your door and take ear plugs with you.
The hospital and staff was wonderful. Day shift much more than night shift. I had some amazing nurses, and then some who weren't so amazing. That goes with any hospital though. The only thing I noticed was that they had an abundance of male nurse's aids. Good when you need help getting up, bad, when you need a sponge bath, or assistance wiping.
