I had my consultation with Dr. Meilahn on 6/2/2004. I had heard a lot of great things about him from a few of the members of a support group I've started attending. I wasn't disappointed at all when my consult date finally arrived. He went over everything in great detail including the drastic changes in my current lifestyle, the commitment I would have to make to help me reach my goal. He wanted to make sure I realized the surgery is just a tool (not a miracle cure for morbid obesity), understood the risks involved, possible side-effects/problems that could occur, and even drew a detailed diagram of what he would be doing in my Roux-en-Y surgery. I experienced the same patience and caring from all of his staff that I dealt with. Although everyone in the office is very busy, no one made me feel like a bother with the questions I posed. Everyone took the time to insure that I felt comfortable and had a thorough understanding to the answers/explainations I was given.

Dr. Meilahan and his staff emphasize strongly about aftercare... They are kind an caring professionals.. I am greatful that I had the surgery and am following up with all my aftercare appts...
I was told in detail of what to expect before and after the proceedure... I feel that Dr. Meilahn and his staff are all EXCELLANT!

I would rate them all the highest marks that could be given.. They all to this day keep me progressing to a healthier woman that I am and will be someday...

Their surgical competence and their bedside manner are both excellent... My life is on the path to a great future thanks to them and the gastric bypass surgery.. I know that my journey will have it's ups and downs, and if I keep on the right path, I will succeed at the goals I have set... Thanks again to the wonderful staff, I am forever greatful....

When I first met Dr. Meilahn I was immediately made aware of his professionalism through his mannerisms and explanations of the procedure. Over time, my impression of him has only gotten better. He is very professional, and very prepared to let you know both sides of this particular surgery. He doesn't sugar coat anything. He's very protective of and concerned about his patients. I loved how he came to the hospital to see me every day and especially how he wanted to be the one to give me my first sip of water following surgery. He wants to be an active participant not only during surgery, but after as well, and that means a lot.

He relies heavily on his wonderful staff. I, having worked with doctors, see this as a great quality. By relying on his staff, that frees him up to do what he was trained to do, and he's a great surgeon. He's very humble about his capabilities, and will be the first to tell you that he's not perfect. But then again, no one is and I felt as though I was in the best care I could be.

He and his team work very well together. Each person has their particular tasks and offers something to the mix, so to speak. They all are competant, professional and great to work with.

I am thrilled about my decision to go with Dr. Meilahn

I switched to Dr. Meilahn in Apr., 2004. Did not feel like old doctor (Dr. Manigat -Voorhees, NJ) was prepared at all and didnt feel a need to pre-op test hardly at all. At my first visit, I was awestruck at the size of Temple University, but I liked the fact he is affilated with Temple. I did wait about 30 minutes past my appt. but not a big deal. His receptionist are cool, they are efficient and joke around with you which is something I LIKE. I am a joker and sarcastic and like people who can keep up. Once I met Dr. meilahn, I liked him a lot. I got a kick when he came in and asked "what can we do for you?" I was thinking to myself, "cut this extra 200 pounds off me?" He seemed very well prepard, did not try to rush you, drew diagrams, explained in detail....all the things you. I even found out his assistant surgeon/Dr. lives in the same town as me. He spent about 30-45 minutes with me. I then met Nyeesha, who is the BOMB!!!! She is super efficient and answers any questions you have. Overall I loved the office and have every confiedence in the world that if anythng does happen, I will be in good hands.

I only saw Dr. Meilahn for my consult and I was referred by another Obesityhelp.com member and I felt comfortable to have been able to talk to him , He explained the surgery in plain english and took his time with me and He actually took time to respond to my e-mails I had sent with Q,s. I don't know what else to say ,He's a winner in my book

My first impression of Dr. Meilahn was that he has the rare combination of being a good surgeon (by reputation) and a warm, caring person. He made me feel at ease with his sense of humor, but did not minimize the seriousness of this surgery in any way. He explained the procedure, the potential risks, and gave me plenty of opportunity to ask questions. The other members of his staff include Vicky and Dawn, the nurse practitioners, Kay, the dietician, and Nyeesha, his administrative assistant. I met Vicky during my initial consult, and she reiterated what Dr. Meilahn stressed: the success of this surgery depends as much on the commitment of the patient to follow through with lifestyle changes as it does on the surgeon who performs the operation. At a mandatory pre-op class, Dawn spoke about many of the specifics of the surgery - both pre- and post-op. My husband went with me to that class and I think it was very good for him to hear all about the good, the bad and the ugly. I met with Kay, who reviewed my eating plan beginning immediately post-op, and continuing after I get home. She, too, was very warm, as well as knowledgeable. Finally, Nyeesha somehow keeps track of the paperwork for an unbelievable number of patients, and always manages to be friendly, courteous and on top of things. I had no worries about anything in my chart being incomplete. She took care of the insurance submission and I had my approval in 2 days.
Overall, so far my impression of this entire office has been nothing but positive.

He definately was a listener and was willing to take his time to explain things. But his office staff were sooo great especially his NP Vicky! She was sooo thorough that I wouldnt consider using anyone else. They explained the risks involved and at this point have a 0 percent mortality rate on the surgery and I am hoping it continues to stay that way. They want serious follow ups and set you up with a dietician for life. The NP even gave me all of her contact numbers in case I have any concerns or questions. I would absolutely without a doubt encourage anyone in the Philadelphia Area to check him out. I will let you know more once I have the surgery.

I liked him from the minute I meet him.

My impression of him only got better,
He is very involved with his patients and really wants them to do well.

His staff is knowledgeable and helpful.

I can't think of anything that I don't like about him.

Dr Meilahn takes this surgery seriouly so if you are not total committed to following the program, wait until you are.

He has a big emphasize on aftercare which is very important.

This is the hardest, most serious diet (weight loss program)you have ever followed

He lays it all out for you without scaring you.

He is a 9.

Both, the residence program at Temple is great also, big part of your hospital care.

I first meet Dr.Meilahn when my sister went for her post-op check up and found him to be very pleasant and a gentle bed side manner. My sister introduced me to him and stated that i am waiting for my appointment for a consult with him. He said good and he is looking forward to seeing me at my consult (due in May). I received a call from the Dr.'s assistant that she had a cancellation for the 12th of march so of-course i jumped at the chance to see him sooner than may.
I found his staff to be very nice and informative. All of the risks were explained to me and the Dr. and his Nurse Practioner Vickie was very knowledgable about the surgery and complications that can happen.
i felt very comfortable with the Dr and his staff when i left. I am sure that i made the right decision on who i will put my self in the hands of.
