Carle Foundation Hospital. Hospital
Overall, I'm glad I had the surgery, but I feel as though I did not have enough knowledge of the procedure prior to surgery.
I don't feel Carle adequately discussed the pain involved with this procedure. They told my husband and I that we'd have a private room which was completely wrong. After being admitted and taken to my room, we were told by the staff that they wished other staff would stop saying that as it simply wasn't true.
Shortly after waking from the surgery one of the nurses became frustrated with my NG tube and a mask I was wearing for oxygen and ended up shoving the NG tube painfully up my nose/throat causing me additional pain. There were a few in the nursing staff who seemed a little impatient with me.
It felt as though the doctor was unwilling to spend time post-surgery explaining things like pain, patient expectations, etc. It was very difficult trying to find him and as a result I had to stay in the hospital one more day than was planned.
I do have to say that there were some exceptional staff members who made my stay comfortable, helping me with pain and answering questions if they knew the answers. I appreciated their time and devotion.
My only concern was that the 2nd day of my stay, they brought in a roomie who ordered fried chicken and all the fixin's from a local restaurant to be delivered for her and her husband! Now that the hospital is building a bariatric wing, everyone will be together, but it was really hard to smell all that food!
I found the hospital staff excellent. There were two exceptional nurses that really stand out in my mind. They have a menu that I could select from and then call it down to the kitchen and it was brought up to me. The food was good and I liked the personal touch of ordering and having it when I wanted it.
Short staff (like everywhere), I was moved from original room to another room at 11pm at night so they can accomodate another patient. I had a nurse wake me up in the middle of a good sleep to ask me if I was okay !!! She thought I was having a nightmare cause I whimpered a lil in my sleep! When I complained about being nauseated the nurse just said it was because of the NG tube and never got anything to make me feel better. I was sent home before having my first pureed meal (which isnt the usual practice). I think I was sent home cause the needed the space. NOT a good experience
