Barix Clinics - Michigan Hospital
Ok, first of all I didn't want a surgeon that was handsome (for obvious reasons). Unfortunately, that didn't happen....he is "hot". Now, that aside, his professional mannerisms were great. I felt very comfortable (except standing there almost naked for pictures) with him and I felt like he knew his stuff. I went in thinking I had sooo much skin and fat to be removed only to find out I had very little (3-4 pounds). Since insurance is covering it I am going through with it. He knew all about insurance issues of what they will and will not cover. This made me feel good since I hate the waiting game for approval. He was very thorough when explaining the procedure and the recovery. I liked him alot. He feels I will have excellent results and that I am "going to be fun to do".

Responsiveness - exceeded expectations
The room and the bathroom that I stayed in did not meet my expectations. I think that patients should have their own rooms to accommodate the rest that is needed. When I had an opportunity to rest, my roommates television was on or she had visitors or she was snoring.
The bathrooms should NOT be shared! It is so difficult to clean yourself. My roommate started her period and every time I went to use the toilet, there was dried blood on the seat.
The bathrooms are very hard to get into with the IV pole/PCA Pump. There is a bump that they have to get over in order for them to get into the bathroom. The bathrooms too small for morbidly obese patients with equipment!
I think that a continuous infusion of pain medication is a better idea than a PCA pump. I found that when I had enough pain medication to walk and do the things that I needed to do, I would then fall asleep. After waking I was VERY painful because the button hadn’t
been pushed.
I asked for an aide (Mia) to be kept out of my room. She wasn’t. My experience would have been better had she not been my aide.
Around 1:00am I heard my aide (Mia) make a comment at the nurses station that she thought getting the patients up at midnight was stupid. I was surprised to hear a health care worker say that. I assumed that all staff had been educated to the importance of
walking. I thought it was inappropriate for her to be talking in this fashion with patients being able to hear.
Mia came into my room that night and lifted my gown. It startled me. She didn’t inform me of what she was doing. She emptied my Jackson Pratt drain. Later, she grabbed my finger. It startled me. Again, she didn’t inform me of what she was doing. She did a blood glucose. I don’t think that it too much to ask to be gently woken and informed of what procedure is about to happen!
Later in the early morning, I tried to get up and walk. Mia came over to my bed and told me not to move until she was done. She emptied my foley bag. She then left the room! She didn’t offer me any assistance in getting out of bed. I was so frustrated with her. I told the midnight nurse that I no longer wanted Mia in my room. The nurse apologized
for Mia’s behavior and assured me that Mia would not be back in.
Two nights later, I heard Mia talking loudly at the nurses desk that there weren’t any lancets to do blood glucose tests. Later, she came in my room and poked my finger with a needle in order to draw blood for the blood glucose test. She informed me that unless someone found her some lancets, she was going to refuse to draw anymore blood glucose’s. Not only was I upset that this aide was allowed back into my room, but I was also concerned if my next blood glucose was going to be drawn!
I went for a walk later that night. As, I went by the nurses station, I asked my nurse if I could have something for pain. He said that he would get it. He asked me to refresh his memory about what room I was in. Mia answered for me and then she said, “and her name is Laura and she is sassy”.
Her behavior and attitude were completely inappropriate. I didn’t appreciate it or need it!
I would like to say that I thought Bariatric Treatment Center was great.
The above incidents were “incidents”......overall, my stay went very well and the staff are excellent! I really liked and respected my day nurse, Susan. Jane, my nurse on midnight’s was so nice and helpful. I would definitely recommend Bariatric Treatment Center!
My only complaint is with Dr. Vayntrub, who released me from the hopsital 2 days after surgery with only enough pain medication for 3 day. I did need medication longer than that and it was a hassle to get. Furthermore, when I did get additional pain medication it was in the form of pills not a liquid, so it took 15 minutes to get in my system. This is unforgiveable in my opinion. I asked the nurse if there was a refill on pain med's when she was going over my discharge paperwork. She looked at the script and informed my mother and myself that there was a refill. I should have looked myself, before leaving the hospital.
Dr poplawski is very competent, he answered all my questions & assured me that any others i had would be dealt with to my satisfaction.
after the surgery, on my 1ast post op visit i expressed concern with nausea i was experiencing in the evenings---he did a comlpete set of xrays to make sure my digestive system was working correctly, it really set my mind at ease.
His staff , as well as the entire hospital staff i had the pleasure to meet ,were fantastic. they were all very friendly , concerned & committed to my care . they truly should be commended for their dedication & empathy with their patients.
dr poplawski did not minimize the risks of surgery & he definetly stresses the importance of aftercare. his surgical competence rated him an "a" with me
The Doc has a personallity, and makes good eye contact...that impressed me. The Center is pretty and although the staff is nice as always a few need some personality.
I would recommend Poplawski, he's the leading physcian in the state and his associate, Dr.Shram, is 2nd. I should have had an open abdomel incision, but he preformed a Lap...it took the two Docs over 5 hours to complete the procedure, but I'm so grateful they put in the EXTRA effort.
