Victor Sorensen Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.

He was open and caring and unassuming. My impression of him has only been enhanced positively since I have known him. His staff, namely his nurse Karen is awesome. They are personable and really care about your overall health throughout the entire journey. I actually questioned if I really had the surgery because Dr. Sorensen's surgical competence and technique left no unecessary pain in its wake. All post-op complications (namely dehydration) can be directly attributed to my own doing. The Nebraska Health System (UNMC) has a surgical gem in Dr. Sorensen.

Dr. Sorenson recently moved to Omaha and started with Dr. McBride and Dr. Thompson. I am so happy he did. I now have a fast approaching surgery date. Thanks to him coming here my surgery will take place sooner than what was previously thought. I could not be happier with my first visit to him. He was very knowlegable and answered all my questions in great detail, even the dumb ones. Michelle his nurse is very helpful and very considerate to all my needs. I could not ask for a nicer person to be taking care of my every need. I will let everyone know my upcoming events and results. I am glad to be in the great care of these individuals.

Dr. Sorensen was not the Dr. the clinic in Flint originallly assigned me to. When I first met with Dr. Sorensen he was very open and concerned about my experience with the clinic up to that point. My surgury was postponed twice due to other health concerns, however everytime in the process that I saw Dr. Sorensen he made me feel as if I was not just a numbered patient. He made me feel like an individual and not just surgury no.****. It really impressed me when my girlfriend had Dr. Sorensen for her surgury and my husband and I ran into him in the cafeteria of the hospital. Not only did he remember me, but also my husband, and even sat with us for a few minutes and just chatted. His dimeaner never changed through out the whole process. After surgury he was concerned about how I was feeling and doing. He always let me know if he was on rounds or not he has an excelent bedside manner in my opinion. My husband greatly appriciated his openness and willingness to answer any questions and address any concerns. Dr. Sorensen is moving on and away from the clinic he is at currently, this saddens me because I really like him. I wish more Dr.s were like Dr. Sorensen, I will miss him and wish him luck with his future. And would like to thank him for mine.

Dr. Sorensen was very nice, he explained the procedure to me in depth. He took the time to answer my questions and gave me all of the information that I needed to feel comfortable about making this decision. He told me that I was a good candidate for surgery but that I should not make a decision until I understood all of the risks involved. It made me feel more comfortable when I found out that he was a trauma surgeon as well, and that I would be getting my surgery at Hurley Medical Center which is a trauma hospital. I was worried about any problems that may occur during surgery and if the hospital was equipped to handle them. Dr. Sorensen does about 3 of these procedures a week and he is very experienced which also put me at ease.
The office staff at Hurley Comprehensive Weight Loss clinic was great. I met with a nutritionist and a nurse (who by the way had the surgery about 10 years ago). All of my questions were answered they gave me a newsletter that publish about every two months and I was signed up to receive future news letters which I have gotten since my visit in October 2002.
The aftercare was addressed by the nurse and she was really adamant about getting up and walking the day after surgery and to continue walking to help with the recovery. There were three phrases that she gave me. CHEW, CHEW, CHEW,
WALK, WALK, WALK
DRINK, DRINK, DRINK
I feel that surgical compentence is more important than bedside manner, of course a good bedside manner would be nice, but surgical competency is more important to me.
As of now, I would give Dr. Sorensen a 10 out of 10, I will be able to rate him better once I have the surgery and during the aftercare.

I have not met Dr. Abead, I have read his web sit at www.hmc.com then click weight loss and you should be able to find him there. He does have good credentials. He is a trauma sergeon and Hurley and he is on the board of trama i believe at henry ford hospital in Detroit. However i did meet Dr.Sorenson and i thought he was wonderful. He even called my doctors office twice and called me twice to say what he felt from his conversations from the doctors office. I am very Pleased that hE will be assisting with the surgery. I also me the doctor that will be doing the after care and he seems very smart. Infact i liked him so much i will se where he practices and see if he can take on any new patients.

I felt instantly at ease with him. He easily answers all questions and is very available (night or day), too.
I had to return to the hospital a week after the surgery and he was there for me-in person.
The staff at the office (Hurley Center for Comprehensive Weight Loss) are down to earth and very helpful.
I would suggest patience when dealing with the insurance companies, and try not to blame it on your doctor's staff--it's not their fault the ins. co.s are slow.
The aftercare is SO important--once this surgery is done you must follow the eating plan to the letter or you'll be miserable and could get a bowel obstruction.
The 'Center' has support groups that meet 2 times a week and there is a nutritionist available 24 hours a day.
The risks are carefully detailed by each member of the staff who is part of the initial interview.
I would rate the staff and especially the doctors, "Excellent"
Both the bedside manner and the surgical competence were more than I could have hoped to get. Not only by my personal surgeon but the entire staff.

I have Dr. Sorenson in Flint, Michigan, but his first name is Victor, (I think!) He is new to making bariatric surgery his specialty but he has been a truama surgeon before now. Because of my high BMI, I find that reassuring because he has dealt with a lot of heart and lung emergencies, I would think. He is also part of a larger hospital program including dietitians and support groups. I like the idea of Hurley Medical Center because it is a regional trauma hospital. I've only been to their center once but I was really pleased with their efficiency and low-key friendliness.
6/7/01 I can't say enough good things about Dr. Sorensen. I am also really impressed with the Hurley program and their after-care and support groups. I would be happy to talk to anyone in greater detail who is thinking of going there.
