Thomas Magnuson Bariatric Surgeon M.D.
I was very impressed with Dr. Magnuson. He answered all of my questions and added questions I didn't even think to ask.rnrnThe staff was amazing and extremely kind.rnrnOriginally I was going to use a different doctor in his practice, yet to complications with my insurance I had to switch. I'll be honest, I'm so glad that happened. I like Dr. Magnuson so much better. I feel he's much more experienced and really cares for his patients.
I met with Dr. Magnuson in November last year. I was impressed with his no nonsense approach. He was straightforward, kind, and did not seem at all concerned about the difficulties of operating on someone who had had previous abdominal surgeries. (I had aortic bilateral fem-fem iliac-iliac bypass graft after a botched back surgery and subsequent abdominal hernia repair times two then a left nephrectomy also related to the graft - it was impinging on the ureter and damaged my kidney because of back flow.) rnrnI loved his office staff; they just are calm, seem to know what they are doing, seem confident and really know their stuff.rnrnAt this point, the only negative thing was that they said I did not have to meet with him again before surgery and I would have liked my family to meet with him so I wish I had brought them with me. They are so worried. I am not though. I would rather not live than be like this.
I will meet my surgeon on April 25, 2007. I am hoping that will be my day to change my life forever! I will keep you posted. rnrnrnrnrn04/25/07rnToday I met my surgeon, what a wonderful man!! He was very kind and gentle. He went over the steps of the surgery and took his time. He did not rush thorough anything. It was a great experiernce. He was an ANGEL!!! rnrnrn1/31/08 I am so pleased that I chose Dr. Magnuson. He is a great person.
My first impression was he seems like a reasonable fellow. He did NOT attempt to SELL me. He told me he felt that I am a good candidate and the reasons. He explained the risks, and possible complications. He encouraged me to attend the free support groups at Hopkins. Dr. Magnuson works with a nurse practioner (Pat Jordon) that handles some of the paperwork and questions. Both Dr. Magnuson and Pat were very professional and very likeable. I asked about Open vs Lap and he explained why he chooses open. He further offered to refer me to someone that does the surgery via LAP - if I felt that would be a better choice. The entire Johns Hopkins program has been terriffic from the very beginning.

Tom Magnuson is GREAT! Busy, but GREAT. In my consult, he was concerned that I meet the requirements for surgery and was comfortable with my decision to have it done. He was against the laparoscopic procedure, citing \"too many complications\" and instead insisating on an Open RNY. He is very busy (he said he does 5 of these a week) and I did not see him again until the day of surgery. Post surgery he relies on his residents A LOT, but I saw him everyday. He emphasized aftercare and nutritional counselling. he actually would not do the surgery without my seeing a Nutritionist first, and then again after. He was plain about the risks (20%) of complications, and in fact I developed a ventral hernia that was repaired later. His office staff is first rate and the surgical clinic folks are top notch.
My first impression of Dr. Magnuson was that he was very knowledgeable and kind. He explained every detail about was was going to happen to me and made me comfortable about my decision. His office staff treated me with respect and kept the atmosphere light and professional. The fact that I only saw Dr. Magnuson once before the surgery had me a little worried but he made me feel really calm the day of surgery and he came to see me in the hospital the rest of my stay. I would rate Dr. Magnuson a 10/10. I would recommend him to anyone in the area who needs a surgeon with competence and an efficient staff. Aftercare has been good. The support group meetings have been wonderful.
