So far we have only spoken on the phone, but he seems great. I emailing former patients of his and they only had good things to say.

I'll let you know more after the surgery.

I have been very impressed with all he offers. It has been extremely easy to contact him and get calls returned when he is unavailable. His wife picked us up at the airport and delivered us right where we needed to be in TJ. While still in the hospital and after surgery, he stopped by to check on me no less than four times. Very concerned about my comfort and well-being. Looking forward to a great losing relationship with him! I must agree with all the other Bandsters he has done that do nothing but praise him. Nothing negative to say...yet.

I talked person to person with Dr. Kuri this morning.
It was wonderful to get a phone call from him and discuss my questions in person.

His rates are $8500 for the whole procedure including hospital stay. Hotel and Transportation are extra.

He was straightforward, to the point, but personable. He said that people have failed on the 'band' only because they cheat it out. Much like someone who gets a bypass surgery that ends up eating too much.

He stressed that the band was a tool for my weightloss, not a magic cure. I liked that!
He is sending me a free book on the lapband with lots of information in it. I'm looking forward to that!

I emailed Dr. Kuri for information and he called me back. I will be in Mexico in August and I will be meeting with him just to ask some questions and evaluate the situation. He was very willing to answer any questions I had and was willing to meet with me when I am in the area.

9/1/01 I have met with Dr. Kuri. He is very warm and does not rush you, he is willing to answer all questions. He has a one-doctor office with a secretary who is very polite and helpful. Remember we are dealing with a different culture here, where the patient seems to be held in high esteem and is not just a case number.

What I like least about him is his location in Tijuana, which appears poor and dirty. But his office is clean and although I have not seen the hospital that he uses, it is an older structure with a 21st century OR.

He was honest about potential complications and stated most of the problems he encountered was in the early learning stages of applying the band.

From what I understand, he is very surgically competent although I do not have first hand information. His bedside manner is sincere, non-judgemental and I thought he was wonderful. Nothing negative to report at this time, however I am still pre-op.

12/7/01 Dr. Kuri is very skilled and compassionate. He kept me 100% comfortable and I have had no complications yet. I would highly recommend him to anyone for his wonderful surgical skill and his kind personality.

Dr. Kuri is a warm, caring surgeon who is well loved by his patients. At my surgery, I was given a private room in this tiny, clean Mexican hospital with attentive nurses to monitor me after the surgery.

I think his office could benefit from more pre-op and post-op information materials. Dr. Kuri sent out no pre-op materials, but showed me the band and explained the procedure in his office the day before surgery. I was given a diet to follow for the first month after surgery. If you are looking for more structured care, you may not be comfortable with his program. I am a go-getter who used the internet yahoo groups to get support from other AGB patients as well as Dr. Kuri's own patients... who provided me with all the knowledge and support I needed.

I think Dr. Kuri's willingness to provide free fills to his post-op patients shows a dedication beyond money. He is willing to have me contact him with questions and he showed up last weekend at the Southern California support group to support his patients and answer questions from newcomers (an event I was fortunate enough to attend only 3 days post-op and greeted with hugs).

If you are from out of town and looking for a competent and caring surgeon who charges reasonable rates ($8500 for everything). This is a great choice. Personally, I expect to fly in to San Diego for my fills and plan my trips so I can reunion with his other patients at their monthly support group. Because Dr. Kuri's fills are free to his patients, the airfare is actually cheaper than using a more local doctor for after care fills.

I saw how everyone at the support group loves him. This is not his group... some of these folks have used other surgeons for the operation and come to him for fills. When I left the meeting, I felt more impressed with Dr. Kuri as a doctor and a person. I am thrilled to continue having him on my journey.

Dr. Kuri is a very caring person. He fully explained the AGB surgery to my husband and me using a FOAM stomach (I want a foam stomach now).

He is an extremely competent surgeon. He had four other doctors assisting him with my surgery. The hospital that he operates out of is small but clean. The hospital staff (nurses, etc.) are very caring and try very hard to understand you. Some of the hospital staff had a good English skills, and some did not. But it was never a problem.

I will warn you that this is Mexico and they operate on Mexico time. Don't be surprised if you are told an appointment time and end up sitting there for an hour before you are seen.

Dr. Kuri's office does NOT have his name on it. This caused me some concerned when I showed up for my pre-op tests but couldn't find his office although he was listed on the building directory. His office is 301. This is the first door on the right of the building.

So far our patient/doctor relationship has been through email and phone calls. I'm sure I'm a pest, but he has absolutely been the greatest help. I first contacted him by email while I was on vacation in July '01, a few days later my phone rang in the evening and there he was. I was flabbergasted by the fact that a doctor would call me after an email inquiry. Since then we've spoke on the phone numerous times, to answer questions of importance, to answer questions of non-importance (like phone # for golf course so my Father could make tee times). Thank goodness he has a great disposition, and high tolerance level :) Since my own contact w/Dr. Kuri, I've heard nothing but praise for his bedside manner, skill, and experience. There is a distinct difference in Doctors in the U.S. and Doctor's outside of the country. Granted I wouldn't trade all the knowledge and technology of US docs and hospitals, but Dr. Kuri, I feel is an exception. Also, Dr. Kuri's contact person, Angelica, pronounced an-hel-ica, is an angel.

Dr. Kuri could not have been nicer or more professional.
He made it very clear that the band is only a tool. He can
do his part and then I have to do mine. He called me at home
in the US to check and see if everything was going all right.

He will give you a sheet with guidelines for eating. Having some
training in nutrition, I was able to expand my eating. My mother
a former RD would like to see me at 1200 kcal a day which is difficult
when on liquids. I have used whey protein powder quite a bit, it helps
keep the kcal up and is very filling.
