Noel Williams Bariatric Surgeon MD, FRCSI, Director, Penn Metabolic & Bariatric
Adjustable Gastric Band
Adjustable Gastric Band
I met Dr. Noel Williams on a Wednesday morning, after meeting with his nutritionist, and nurse practitioner. He was taller and thinner than the pictures I had seen of him from the hospitals web site.rnHis office is at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital on the fourth floor of the Silverstein Building, very easy to get to, the office staff are very caring people, they listen to you when you talk to them. I have been to many doctors’ offices, and dealt with some extremely rude receptionists, medical assistants, nurses, so forth and so on. I look at life like this; if you’re not happy with what you’re doing for a career, then change it, because it reflects on your company, your work, and your attitude. Now don't get me wrong I'm sure I'll meet someone in his office having an off day or I just don't click with but hey you know what? We can find that everywhere we go if that's all we look for.rnWe didn't talk allot about after care, we talked more about getting me set up on losing a certain amount of weight prior to getting my actual surgery date. The morning I met with Dr. Williams I weighed in at 419.3 lbs. He discussed with me that it was imperative to him that I show that I am committed to this and lose the 19 pounds before he'll give me a surgery date, pending all the preliminary consults that have to be completed for the surgery.rnHe spoke to me about the risks of the surgery that I am interested in (gastric bypass) we went over the pro's and con's of the surgery and the other options that are available.rnDr. Williams portrays to me a very confident persona about what he has chosen as a life profession, he seems to be very committed to his patients prior to and after surgery. I'm sure that I will have more to say, after I meet with Dr. Williams a few more times.rn
I have met with Dr. Williams twice so far. He and Dr. Rosato, my previous WLS surgeon, are part of the same group. These docs are top in their field. Be prepared to wait. The office people are fabulous. I have been to this hospital before, and as a medical professional as well as a patient, I can tell you that it is one of the best hospitals in the country.rnrnrnFirst Surgeon: Jan 2000 I met with Dr. Ernest Rosato at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Very straightforward, very professional. I was thinking RNY, but he suggested a modified form of the VBG which will avoid malabsorption problems. He did say he would do whichever operation I wanted, but I respect his opinion and will go with the VBG.
I was originally recommended to Dr. Noel Williams by a close friend and my Primary Physician and ever since the first visit I have had nothing but positive results! rnThe Office staff has been nothing but nice and very helpful in every aspect. Every detail was covered and they left nothing to chance. rnDuring my first visit with Dr. Williams he made me feel at ease about the procedure and was always asking if i had any questions or if something was not clear. He likes to make sure that his patients are well informed and know what to expect and what is expected from them!rnI have seen 3 Obesity Doctors and I must say that Dr. Williams was by far the nicest and most thorough including his pre-op care and support team.rnI have heard from a good number of people and Doctors that Dr. Williams is the best Gastris Bypass Surgeon around period!
He seemed okay-never really new the guy, spent most of the time with nurses and nutritionists. I didn't even know which doctor he was in the operating room. Think I only saw him one other time about a year prior to the surgery because I postponed it for a year. Met him in the hospital each day which was good. He was very attentive and open to all my questions and concerns. I felt confident that he would take good care of me by his demeanor and communication with me.
I wish I had met with him more than once before the procedure. He was a virtual stranger to me when I had the procedure. His reputation preceded him so I was confident in his skills, however, I have never had surgery before where I hadn't met and gotten to know the doctor fairly well before the procedure. This was a first for me. If I had to do it again, I would have like to have actually known the person not just the reputation. His assistant and nursing staff were very helpful to me thank god. Overall-the whole process seemed very mechanical and impersonal. I was given plenty of education and paperwork before the procedure but would have benefitted from some one on one follow-up or been sent home with at least a couple protein packets to try or liquid vitamin sample. I was really overwhelmed with everything and all the reading I had done before seemed garbled and confusing when I actually left the hospital.
During the consult, I found Dr. Williams to be very knowledgable and immediately felt comfortable with him. He was pleasant, patient, and explained things in layman's terms, for which I was very appreciative. I felt all the above things with his staff as well. From what I have read, and as is true of any professional, I believe Dr. Williams delegates what he can to a capable staff of professionals in order to be able to concentrate 100% on the surgery.
I had a great experience w/Dr. Williams. His bedside manor is great he is actually very funny. The staff at Penn is also excellent. After the surgery you don't really see the Doc much pretty much the nurses. The aftercare program at Penn is amazing. There is alot of pre op stuff you have to go through before they will even schedule a surgery date. Nothing but good things to say about the doc and staff there. The hospital has a separate ward for Bariatrics.rnrnrnI want to also add my Plastic Surgeon Dr. Bret Garber. He is sooo great. If anyone needs a great Plastic surgeon Then think about consulting with him. He is located in Marlton NJ.rnrnrnrnrnrnrnrnrnrnrnrnrnrnrnrnrnrnrnrnrnrnrnrnrnrnrnrnrnrnrnrn
I met my surgeon over 2 years ago when I was thinking about getting the lap-band. He was recommended to me by a few of my co-workers. He was very supportive but I found out the at the time, my insurance only covered the gastric. I did not want to get this surgery so I decided to wait and see if I could lose the weight on my own. After almost 2 years of disappointment of losing and gaining, I reached out to Dx Williams again and scheduled a consultation for the gastric thinking that my insurance still did not cover the lap band. He remembered me and said that if I was still interested in the lap band, the insurance is covering it now and that I am a good candidate for either surgery and that he will support whatever decision I make. He told me to take sometime and research more info about both procedures and then come back to see him. So after 2 weeks of research I knew that the lap-band was what I wanted to do. I really respect the fact that he allowed me to decide what I wanted to do for myself and not decide for me. He is a very cool and down to earth surgeon but will be straight with you also. I haven't had my surgery yet but I feel confident that everything will be OK.
I was so impressed with the entire staff at University of Penn. My initial appt. was over 2 hours and Dr. Williams spent quite a bit of time with me.rnHis bed side manner is great too, good sense of humor and he is careful which I like.rnThey covered everything from how I would bed eating to risk essement and helped me to understand what would be happening to my body and that this is not a so called \"QUICK FIX\". rnI definitley like him.rnrnPOST OP- This is an increadible/compassionate man. When I was in pre-op he was worried he would not be able to do surgery becasue of possible adhesions. I was the last surgery of the day and instead of giving up or rushing he took an extra 1 1/2 hours to clean out every adhesion so I could have my dream. He is kind, caring and has the best bed side manner I have seen in a surgeon, since my spinal surgeon Dr. Vaccarro at Jefferson.rnrn
