Dr Zapata was about everything you'd want in a doctor, experienced, knowledgable, great reputation, and most importantly caring. You get the sense when meeting him that he really likes his job and helping people. He or his patient representative are always contactable by cellphone and email and get back with you quickly. They also gave out plenty of literature of how to live after surgery and are there if I need to get in contact with them. The hospital in Mexico was nicer than the one I work at, and spotless clean. The only negative I can think to say about my experience in Mexico is that I could not communicate with the nurses at the hospital, however there was someone there that would translate for something important. I also wouldn't recommend going alone as I did, even though all my transportation and everything was taken care of and it is quite doable. I just got a bit homesick. Overall, would not trade Dr Z for any other!

That's gotta tell you he is fantastic.rnHe has it all and he is just unbelieveable.rnrnI have absolutely nothing negative to say about Dr. Zapata, his staff, the hospital or the care I got.

I had my lap band surgery on 06/15/07 with Dr. Zapata. My impression of Dr. Zapata was that he was a very caring surgeon that truly cared about his patient and their overall health. His staff in Mexico and here in the US are wonderful. They are always available by phone or email and respond quickly. I did not like that I would not get to see Dr. Zapata again, but that was a consequence of choosing to have the surgery in Mexico. And I did get to see him again at a bash his company sponsored. Seeing him reaffirmed my impressions of him in Mexico. He truly cares and wants to see his patients suceed. I highly recommend Dr. Zapata and would return to him in a heartbeat!

Dr. Zapata was very nice and his staff was great. He spent a lot of time answering all questions. Hospital and hotel were very nice and clean. His driver was also nice , but drove a little to fast. There was no pre-op diet and i really liked that. Everything went great. Have not heard from them since the surgery and that is the only drawback. I had hoped they would e-mail and see how i was. Donna

Dr. Miguel Zapata is a very competent, compassionate surgeon. My first impression of him was very good, the day before surgery he came to the hotel and explained the surgery procedure and the plan for the day of surgery. Dr. Zapata and his staff kept me posted on what time my surgery was going to take place, picked me up to take me to the hospital and were available to call my family after the surgery. He explained that I would have to work to lose weight after the surgery and that the band would not do it all. The hospital was immaculate, the hospital staff was very caring and I felt very safe there. Dr. Zapata's bedside manner is tops, I did have some nausea after I got back to the hotel but had Dr.'s cell phone number and called him with my problem and he brought me anti-nausea medication. Since surgery I have been in contact with him and his staff with any problems I have encountered. I highly recommend Dr. Zapata!!!!!!! email me with any questions you may have.rnLucy NelsonrnMobridge SD

My name is Christina and I live in Corpus Christi, Texas. I had been greatly discouraged, because I had been denied the gastric surgery coverage by my insurance twice. They told me that I didn't have enough co-morbidity problems or complications. After surfing the web, I found Dr. Miguel Zapata in Monterray, Mexico. When I told my family that I wanted to have the gastric bypass in Mexico, they thought that I was crazy! I waffled about going twice, but after speaking with Alma Orozco (English speaking employee of Dr. Zapata) over the phone and having all of my 101 questions answered, I decided to go for it. The airline flight was handled by their travel agency and my son and nanny flew down with me. When we arrived at the airport, we were met by a driver sent to pick us up. He was an English speaking driver and was very kind to us. He drove us to the Sheraton Hotel in Monterray (Dr. Zapata has a price that includes the surgery, hospital, and accomodations). It was a very nice hotel that has a private bridge that crosses over to a shopping mall. I had made arrangements for a private nurse to be hired to take care of me for an unbelievable $50.00 U.S. dollars a day. Alma met me at the hotel that evening and answered any questions that I had. The Dr. arrived later that evening to meet with me and explained that the driver would pick me up in the morning to take me to the hospital for necessary tests before the surgery. I was amazed that Dr. Zapata would take the time out of his day to meet with me at the hotel. This just is not customary of an American Doctor. At the hotel, everyone spoke English and my nanny and son were able to swim and have a free breakfast daily. I went to the hospital and met with a Cardiologist and had x-rays performed. The cardiologist spoke English, but everyone else was Spanish speaking only. I speak so-so Spanish and was able to communicate and be understood. This was the only difficulty that some might experience - but nothing that can't be answered by Alma. The driver \"Santos\" was excellent, because he waited for all of my lab work and tests to be completed. He even explained to the billing department that my bill was being handled by Dr. Zapata - they were trying to charge me for all of my tests...and I couldn't make them understand that I had already pre-paid my surgery. Later that day, I met \"Angela\" the nurse who was going to take care of me. She spoke only Spanish, but my nanny was able to communicate with her. She asked me what hours I wanted her to come in daily - I asked her to come in at 10:00 a.m - 6:00p.m. I was very nervous about my surgery, but felt comfortable with my Dr. and I felt that I was in good hands. The day I had surgery (July 16th) I went in early to prep. I remember laughing with the Dr. who was going to put me out, but that was it. I woke up feeling very sore, but otherwise alright. I was in the hospital for 3 days and returned to the hotel with 2 drains for an additional 6 days. During the first couple of days, I made myself walk a lot. I had pain in my upper shoulder and arm. This is a pretty common reaction to all of the gas build up in the body...it travels up, and the only way to get rid of it is to walk. Dr. Zapata and Alma visited nightly. They made me laugh and I enjoyed getting to know them better. He explained what expectations that he had for diet and exercise - and was able to fill out my disability forms that I asked. He even wrote out a medical statement for my Internist in the States to put in my medical file. I can't begin to tell you what a kind man that he was. I saw how exhausted he was after a day filled with surgeries and he still found time to visit all of us in the hotel daily. Alma Orozco was so sweet and even scheduled a beauty day for me at her sister's beauty salon. Even with all of my bandages and drains, I was able to get my hair colored and cut and a facial...laughing. By the end of my visit, my nurse took me gambling during the day to a casino, so that I could get out of the hotel. My son really enjoyed his time in Mexico, because the nanny kindly drove us anywhere we wanted to go. She took my son and nanny to an amusement park and for shopping excursions. Angela was a great help to me and excellent with my child. At the end of the trip, my drains were removed and I was headed back to the airport. I felt fine enough to drive myself home. I would highly suggest Dr. Zapata for this type of surgery. He and his staff were very kind and I felt that my care was almost better that what I would have received in the States. The personal care that I received from Dr. Zapata and his assistant Alma was out of this world!
