My first impression was he was somewhat harsh. Over time he was very professional.
His office staff are great, warm, caring and very helpful.I really have nothing to say about disliking anything about him. He gets straight to the point. He does not beat around the bush and his very forward.
Aftercare his assistance does most of it and he is very helpful. Their aftercare program is very strict and easy to follow. I have no problems withthat area.
They explain all the risks to you about the surgery way ahead of time.
I would rate him and his office staff very highly, I feel very comfortable when i call or go for a office visit.
which is better both are good in my opinion,I have no complains at all.

Mindy and I had a consultation with him a couple of months ago now, and I found him to be a very thorough Doctor who truly cares about his patients. Dr. F is very knowledgeable and not only talked about the positives and negatives, but also sent us home with several articles to read about obesity. Other people have called him a perfectionist and I would agree with that. I would say that Dr. F is a little impatient at times, when he asks you something you better answer right away or he gets a little smug. However, his skills as a doctor make up for his personality traits. So far I would rate Dr. F a 10.

Dr Flanagan has a great follow up program and I have been very impressed by it.

My first impression was that he was a well-informed, well-trained surgeon. After the initial visit, my impression only IMPROVED! He is also very caring and a TERRIFIC surgeon. His office staff were ALL extremely helpful from day one. There wasn't anything that I didn't like about Dr. Flanagan. Future patients should know that he is the outgoing President of the American Society for Obesity and he is an EXPERT in this surgery and follow-up. The aftercare is stressed continuously. There is a VERY structured aftercare program with both literature, check-ups, and phone calls. Dr. Flanagan was very open about the surgical risks; especially since I am a revision patient. I would rate Dr. Flanagan as a 15 on a scale from 1 to 10!! Surgical competence is ALWAYS more important; but it's nice to have a good bedside manner at the same time.

He annoyed me no end because I wanted a distal RNY and he insisted I only needed a proximal. He was right.

Dr. Flanagan is the best Weight Loss surgeon I have heard about. He follows up and does blood tests regularly and has been annoyingly right.

His office staff has been helpful and always willing to come to my aid when I get into trouble which only happened once but It was three years after surgery and they saw me immediately and helped immensely.

His bedside manner was typically surgeon.

He knows the field of WLS and has done upwards of 1500.

Yes, I had to sign a contract that I would attend a support group and make all my post op office visits up to and including a yearly checkup forever.

I think that he supplies everything possible opportunity for help if the patient needs it plus he did a good job of protecting me from my own stupidity.

Yes

Great - I'm a convert

Surgical competence but his physician's assistant does most of the after surgery care now.

my first impression of him was well not very good. He made me feel very wrong for being there he had told me that i had not tried hard enouph and that my mother of all people could not be my support person. It was a long trip and i was so happy to be there to just have it shattered and just for me to cry in front of him and have him tell me that he wanted to see me cry. what is up with that?? In the letters he sends he says that you dont have to convince him but the insurance company but i think it was the complete opposite. I cryed the whole way home. I am very nervious to meet him again in the future but i really liked his staff I guess that is a plus huh?? you know the more i think about it i think he is just trying to be carful and make sure this is the write thing for me so dont take my meeting with him like he will be like this for you maybe i got him on a bad day

Dr Flanagan was very direct and to the point. He had little time for foolishness or self-degradation of his patient. I was a little put off by him.

My impression of Dr. Flanagan changed over time to a sincere admiration and respect. I realized how much importance he placed on his patients. He was willing to take my case even tho Medicare does not pre-approve the procedure and he had no guarantee of payment.

The office staff were super! They made me feel good about myself and my decision. One of the nurses had the procedure herself and it was very comforting to talk to her.

Dr. Flanagan is commited to aftercare and expects his patients to do the same. He has two years of follow-up appointments and demands his patients attend support group. He states after care is just as important as the surgery in order to make the best weight loss.

I believe surgical competence is better than bedside manner. His office staff made up for his direct manner by being encouraging and supportive. Later, Flanagan and I were able to laugh together and he gave me a piece of his huge jade plant for myself when I commented on its beauty. I hope I'm able to make it grow as it means a lot to me.

Dr. Flanagan is very good doctor. I would highly recommend him to any one looking into WLS.

His office staff is wonderful. They are extremely busy so be patient.

The followup is also good. the only thing is that after surgery you be seen by his assistant, Patrick Sawyer. I have only seen Dr. Flanagan once in passing after I had the surgery. Patrick is excellent so I don't really mind seeing only him. He is very good to talk too and help with any problems you might have.

I was so happy to meet Dr. Flanagan who treated me like a bright person who has a disease and needs surgery to fix it. He validated my predicament and made me lose most of the guilt I have been packing around for years. I could not choose a better person to perform this procedure on me and I understand this is dangerous and not a picnic but life as it is for me at this weight is constant pain and the inability to lead a normal life. His office staff were wonderful and I could not have asked for a better situation. I would recommend him highly but he already has too many patients.
That would be only complaint and the fact that he is so smart it is hard to keep up with him. Aftercare is stressed that this is a tool is stressed that it will be up to me to follow the RULES is stressed and that exercise is key.....I am rating Dr. Flanagan as a 10 out of 10....

I liked him. He was easy to talk to and listen to. I went into his office very informed about wls but if i hadn't been that informed he is someone that you could learn information from and feel comfortable asking questions. He hands out a blue book full of info that you keep with you and refer to throughout the process. His staff have been friendly to me on the phone and in person. Sue and Lu are the two I've spoke with the most. This doctor has support groups throughout Oregon that meet once a month. I will update in 3 wks after surgery.

He is very inteligent! Knows his stuff.
No my impression didn't change, it just grew wider.
His office staff are very caring and helpful
The thing that I disliked about him would have to be the ubruptness of his bedside manner, and the fact that HE IS ALWAYS RIGHT! no matter what.
I would want others to know that even though his bedside manner is not always the best... He is a great surgeon!
He begins his first interview by explaning that this is an entire life change and makes you commit to after care.
Yes a very structured aftercare program.
the first interview is between three to four hours long. There is nothing he leaves to question. He has also written a book with everything you ever wanted to know plus some. He expects you to read it and bring any questions to the interview.
Knowing that my life is in the hands of a great surgeon is much more important to me than his bedside manner. His bedside manner will go away, my life on the other hand I cherish and I want someone who knows what he is doing!
