Kimberley Steele Bariatric Surgeon M.D.
I have been very impressed with Dr. Steele and the staff at John's Hopkins. I must admit the first time that I met Dr. Steele I was a little worried about my husband and I's choice of surgeons. The first meeting was tough and she was tough on us. Looking back now, I know that she just wants to make sure that you are prepared and succeed at this surgery. It was a little longer process than I thought it would be as we had some hang ups with other appointments. I had by surgery on 2/15/11. Dr. Steele was wonderful. She had a great bedside manner. She took time to spend with me when she visited me both days after my surgery until I was discharged. We talked over some concerns that I would have coming home. I would highly recommend anyone in the area that can use John's Hopkins and Dr. Kimberley Steele as their surgeon, to do so. In speaking to others that have used this practice, Dr. Steele has the best success rate of all the surgeons in the practice. I know that I will succeed with this surgery and that Dr. Steele will be there every step of the way to support me.
My first impression of Dr. Steele was that she is very thorough and strict. She wants to know that the patient fully understands the risks of the procedure and the lifelong changes they will need to make. The staff at Johns Hopkins Bayview is very patient oriented. They are fabulous. Aftercare at the hospital was very attentive. Dr. Steele has an excellent bedside manner. Absolutely nothing to complain about.
At first impression, I had to ask do you smile?rnAfter seeing the seriousness of the surgery I saw why she seemed hard on me at first. The office visits were always professional with the most help from the staff. rnShe made sure everything was in order before my surgery. I had gastric-bypass with Esophagus surgery at the same time. I also have a pace maker so the cardiologist had to be involved. It seemed like a life time getting to the surgery date but DR. Steel was only looking out for my best intrest, and I am now glad she was my surgeon. I am now 4 months post-op and over 75 pounds less. After all was said and done surgical competence is far more important, bedside manner can be overlooked but a possible health problem can not. As long as you do what you are told to do things will go great, they did for me and Dr. Steele is the best.
John Hopkins was my first choice because they were a pioneer of bariatrics in the area, and they have a rock hard reputation of care and experience. rnrnI had originally selected a different surgeon, Dr. Schweitzer, because of his experience. He did not accept my insurance. So, I was offered Dr. Steele and thought I'd give her a try. I was originally going to be one of Dr. Steeles first patients for surgery (a little scary but hey, everyone starts somewhere!); however, my insurance decided otherwise by giving more and more hoops through a whole two years of waiting. So I have been with her for, I guess you could say, two years of this journey. Dr. Steele is such a wonderful physician. As far as surgical competence, I cannot comment myself but have heard wonderful things from her previous patients.rnrn Dr. Steele is very upfront but also very interested and has a \"bedside manner\" and attitude with her patients that you don't often see. She is genuine, and certainly was honest and upfront about herself as a surgeon and what she expects of her patients. She is not afraid to listen, actually listen, and is very personable. She is also very passionate about her patients - last appt I had with her she was in the waiting room attempting to convince a gentleman to go to the ER because he was having chest pains. He was refusing because he needed to \"get back to work\" and was very argumentative and nasty with her. She stood her ground and was professional the whole time, and it's truly not often you see a physician out in the waiting room.rnrnShe has done much research in bariatric surgery, including genetic studies after surgery among others, and has received awards for her studies - so it is not just her job, it's also something she takes heart in. She also assists students as an instructor at John Hopkins University through her office, again showing a passion for the study by helping others learn about it.rnrnShe is very clear about the risks of her surgery, and her aftercare was extremely emphasized and clearly laid out. Again, she was very clear what she expected of her patients for the surgery to be successful and for my overall health.rnrnDr. Steele is honest, upfront, and while she is confident, she does not have the arrogance about herself that some physicians do. That was my favorite part. :)rnrnThe only thing I was not happy with was her staff. At times were too busy. It took a very long time sometimes to hear back from them about certain issues I was having with my insurance coverage. I didn't always get to speak to Dr. Steele's secretary, often times it would be a different office member. There were many times that things were lost in the shuffle or mix ups that would occur. They were always very friendly, however, and tried hard to do what they could. The office is for several physicians and not just for bariatric but for general surgery as well, so they see many patients. Dr. Steele did always address the issues as they came up herself.rnrnHere's the link to Dr. Steele's information through John Hopkins Bayview.rnrnhttp://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/surgery/faculty/Steele

Dr. Steele is an excellent surgeon. I had no complications after surgery. She works out of John Hopkins in Baltimore -- You can't get any better than that. She is tough in that she will not operate on you unless she feels you have a complete understanding of the surgery, its risks, and the life changing side effects that you will have after it. But once you get past that you are good to go. And her bedside manner is incredible. Incredibly kind and great with talking to patients personally after surgery. I would giver her a 10 and the JH Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore a 10 as well. The only negative is the daytime nursing at JH. And if you deal with you main nurse you are fine. Hindsight being 20/20... Because JH is a teaching hospital, the day nursing staff has a head nurse and a training nurse assigned to you. Next time I will deal any important issues with my main nurse. (I was allergic to morphine and the nurse in training did not recogonize it)

Dr. Steele is a wonderful person as well as an excellent surgeon.rnrnAnd, she is a pusher. She was on the ward the day after making sure I was getting up already. rnrnShe was also a stickler for aftercare making sure you had your protein mixes and prescriptions before you even came to the hospital for surgery. She was also very emphatic about keeping in the right amount of protein and fluid. rnrnI liked the idea of the visiting nurse checking on me for the first couple of weeks and making sure things were on task so even though you were kicked out of the hospital a little early, the aftercare was there.rnrnThe risks were explained very well and I am still glad I have the sleeve versus the gastric bypass as I know my limitations.rnrnMy only issue was the idea of getting in the protein when you were only supposed to have a spoon or a few sips of anything you comsumed in the first couple of weeks and maybe the surgeon should emphasize that the chances of that actually happening aren't always 100%. rnrnI would recommend her highly and I believe that a combination of surgical competence and bedside manner is what helps a patient leave the hospital intent on being successful in their goals.rnrnThanks again!!!

My first impression of Dr. Steele is okay I guess. I was far from wowed like I was when I first met Dr Kilgman from University of Maryland, however, I think that may be more my fault than hers. I have been courting this surgery for five years, and always something happens to disqulify me, I'll get moved to a different state (military spouse) and have to start over, or I'll lose my insurance and when I get it back I have to start over. Never the less I keep trying, I know this surgery can save my life, at a bare minimum improve the qulit of it, however Dr. Steele was not pleased that I wasn't to know how long from the time I met with her the forst time untill the surgury could be scheduled.

Doctor Steele's bedside manner is personable and puts you at ease. I love her and her entire staff. Everyone worked as a team to get you ready for surgery and the support after surgery is outstanding. Dr. Steele is very serious (as she should be) about this surgical procedure and ensures that her patients are educated on the pros and cons. I would rate Dr. Steele a 12 out of 10.
