1/08/01 I see I haven't updated this in awhile.
First let me say I did not return to Dr. Cahill. He seemed disinterested in me from the beginning because my BMI was borderline. Then I recieved a bill from his office almost immadiately for that one visit and it was for $350.00. It seemed to me he had already decided it wasn't going to happen for me.
Then I met with my PCP and we won't even go there today.
In December, I met with Dr. Kushner for an initial consult for WLS through Northwestern Hospital. Dr. Kusher set up appointments for me to see the dietician and have the psych eval done. He and his team said I was an excellent candidate and referred me to the surgery department of Northwestern. Because of the holidays it was awhile before I got the appointment for the surgery consult.
Today, I met with Dr. Kenric Murayama. I was very impressed with him. He was very informative, he addressed the risks of surgery in general as well as the risks associated with WLS. He answered all my questions and said to call he or his nurse if I have any more. He was friendly as was the rest of his staff. He is with Northwestern Hospital in Chicago.
Dr. Murayama said they rarely have problems with my insurance company and as soon as they get the approval, I am a GO!!!! I have a tentative date in Feb.
As for the after care, they do have a structured after care program and a support group. I will update that as I learn more.

The first surgeon I spoke to was Dr. Cahill,
he was at the Bariatric Center in Belvedere, Il. and is now at Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park, IL. He was nice and answered all my questions, but didn't have much faith that my insurance will cover WLS for me, my bmi is 37.8 and my only co-morbids are asthma, aches and pains. I have bursitis and he said in ten years it will be worse but right now it may not be enough to qualify me. Isn't that nuts?
He didn't discuss after care, I think because he doesn't think I'll be able to have the sugery. He did tell me he wants me to have an electrocardiagram(phen-fen user) and a pulmonary function test(asthma).
Dr. Murayama is wonderful. He seems to really care about his patients and he was just so accomodating with his explanations. His staff is great and did a wonderful job in processing the changes to my insurance company.
If there is anyone in Chicago who is looking for a surgeon/program, they should consider Northwestern and Dr. Murayama. They make sure that you are armed with all of the information and resources possible for a successful outcome.
He has great bedside manner and he definitely knows what he is doing. He addressed the risks of surgery, and made sure that I understood all that I needed to to calm my nerves.
Overall, he is a ten. I love the program there.
