Dr. "V" is a great guy. Down to earth and honest. Him and his team did a great job and I would highly reccomend him to anyone seeking a surgeon for this procedure. He was always available to answer my questions and I even had his home number. I may have gotten that by accident but he didn't seem to mind. As far as post-op care , I was only able to see him a few times after the surgery before I lost my insurance. I am certain that if I needed help or had any questions he would be available to answer them though.

I felt Dr vitello was great. My impression has not changed i liked him from the moment i met him. His office staff is great. kelly was great. He doesnt joke around. I was given a lot of after care information in the form of paper info. He fully informed me about the risks of sugery. over all he was a very good doctor. His sugical competence is much better than his bed side manner. I wanted a good surgeon and i got the best. He was very kind. I would have loved to have seen him smile.

Well today 3/20/03 I went to my first consultation with Dr. Vitello. He is straight and to the point. He did not sugar coat anything and told me exactly what to expect. He gave me all of his information, the risks of the surgery and what I need to do before he will do the surgery on me. I think Dr. Vitello is very nice. Although he did make me feel like (for a moment) that I was asking stupid questions. The only thing I do not like is that he does open ryn only he does not do lap.
If you are a smoker like myself he will not do the surgery on you unless you quit. So this is the first thing to do for myself. He does in fact exphasize aftercare is up to me.
He addressed the risks of the surgery extremely well in fact gave me a list of the complications and what he has experienced as a doctor personally. I think Dr. Vitello is excellent. 10++++

I must be very lucky in that I really liked Dr. Joseph Vitello the first time I met him. He was honest and NOT overweight. Over the years, I have been put on many diets by doctors who have also been overweight, not as overweight as I was and am. My sister's first question after I met with Dr. Vitello was "was he overweight?" He told me about the possible complications that could occur, one of them being anorexia post operatively at which time I thought "Me, anorexic?"

His office staff was very helpful, kind and courteous.

If you are in the Chicago, IL area and are looking for a doctor to do this procedure, I feel that you can't go wrong with Dr. Vitello.

I feel that both surgical competence and bedside manner are both very important.

I will be seng Dr. Vitello for my pre-op visit on March 20, 2003.

Yes I am getting nervous as my date gets closer, but I feel very confident in my doctor. I also have a friend of my niece that went to college with a patient of his. Rich had his surgery on July 23, 2002 and had nothing bad to say about Dr. Vitello.
He said that even if you don't think the doctor is talking to you, you can rest assured that he is conversing with your primary care physician.

Dr. Vitello was very reserved when I first met him. He gave me the impression that he was not overly thrilled about perfoming the surgery on me. As a matter of fact, I got the impression that he was trying to talk me out of it. He went over the risks involved in great detail and wanted to make sure I understood the risks. He almost scared me off. I now understand that it was in my best interest to be aware of all associated risks surrounding this procedure. Once I assured Dr. Vitello of my understanding of the risks and of my desire to continue. His attitude became much more relaxed and he was not hurried in our interview and took the time to answer all of my questions and finally to assure me that he had not lost a single patient. I would rate him EXCELLENT overall.

Dr Vitello, was very soft spoken and direct. It took a long time for my 1st appointment but it was worth the wait. The surgery was the best decision of my life. I had no pain from day one and the scar was not hard to deal with. Dr Vitello made it very clear of all the dangers this procedure could bring. I had none. After care follow up was left up to me to pursue. I have talked to the staff dietician Venessa she is good. I have not attended any of the group meetings but I have chatted on line with others before and after my surgery. Dr Vitello and his staff were allways suportive. I have lost 200 hundred pounds in 15 months and have stopped taking all diabetic medicine and no more shots!! Thank's to Dr Vitello I'm a new person.

My first impression of Dr. Vitello was very blunt and straight forward. However, over time, I became more relaxed and comfortable with him and he became more open to me about my surgery, both pre and op. He is a great surgeon and does genuinely care about his patients. His office staff is basically just him. he does have a nurse that takes the patients vitals, but really it is just him. The only thing that I least liked about Dr. Vitello that at my very first appointment with him, I felt that he was very distant to me. He is a tough nut at first, but very compassionate. Dr. Vitello emphasizes very much about aftercare. He always has me make my next appointment with him after I see him. He stresses about taking vitamins, iron and calcium. Dr. Vitello's aftercare program depends on how well you are doing. His program varies from patient to patient and that he would tell you when your next appointment should be. Like I said earlier, he is very straight forward about everything. He goes over and addresses everything from a surgery going smooth to the worst case scenario. Overall, Dr. Vitello gets an A+ from me. His surgical compentence and bedside manner are both great. When he would come to see me in the hopital, he stayed until I had all of my questions answer.

Dr. Vitello seems to be a Very busy man.A rather matter of fact type. He has answered any and every question I have had with a great deal of detail and never makes me feel that I'm asking a dumb question. He has been very hard to get a hold of. Had to wait 3 weeks after obtaining my approval to get a call back just to schedule my surgery date, then have to wait a little over 2 months for the actual date. Dr. Vitello does not utilize much suport staff for office visits and he schedules things him self. Dr. Vitello went over every possible risk and percentages of risk at my first appointment. He made me feel that I was making an informed discesion with everything out on the table. He has lots of experience he has done well over 500 proceedures as of Oct 2002.

My first impression of Dr. Vitello was that he was not going to "sugar coat " this tool. He told me that this was up to me to us this tool...he also explained in detail everything about himself and the surgery. He also answered every question I had. My impression seemed to change with Dr. Vitello after my first visit, when he knew that I wanted to be his patient and I was determined to get the weight off! I am sure he sees many people that are unsure if WLS will be for them. His bedside manner was very good and he was actually somewhat humerous in the hospital. His staff is great, they really take the time out to listen to you, (especially his dietician Vanessa!) There would be only one complaint and that is it takes a long time to make an appointment with his office...(I do understand though since he will see all of him patients and call all of his patients himself. Once you have surgery you are his patient for life and he will give you excellent care. He has support groups and excellent aftercare...you follow up before and after surgery with his dietician. Dr. Vitello explaines all the risk of the surgery during his initial consultaltion with you. I would rate Dr. Vitello and his staff a perfect 10 !!
