John Baxter Bariatric Surgeon D.O.
He was very much to the point and blunt. He saw himself as being most people's last change without being judgemental or pationising. However over time I found it quite hard for him to actually listen to me and my concerns and point of view. For example I was concerend about my BM and gas as it was very very smelly. He just told me to eat a no fat diet and the problem would go away. I have done that and the problem has not gone away but yet the subject is now a closed one. HE is a very skilled surgeon and does not suffers fools gladly. He has a very supportive team including a great dietician who's listening skills are much better. Above all when I went to the hospital everything was laid in place for me being an obese patient from an extra large gown to an electronic bed. The staff caring directly for me were fully briefed in dealing with issues surrounding odese patients such as using talc and cream to dry in the skin folds after washing. A small detail I know but it saves an embarrasing explanation. The only thing I found lacking was the phycological support post operation. Prof Baxters surgical competence and wonderful support team makes up for his abrupt bedside manner.
He was honest and direct
He has a very capable team working with him.
The thing I didn't like is that he is often away and with there being so many people in this Country needing this type of help, would be better if there were more surgeons able to carry out this proceedure.
He appears to be very well known in his field and recommends more surgeons trained to do this proceedure.I long wait in the UK for this from 3 years upwards.
After care is a must and he has a structured aftercare support.
He stated that there was a risk with this surgery but then there is with any invasive surgery. I found it an acceptable risk if it will improve my well being.
Over all I would say he was a realist and lets you know the situation. Not everone is suitable for surgery. I guess I was lucky.
I will comment on surgical competence after the op. Beside manner is good.
Professor Baxter is a very nice man. He is straight and to the point with a humourous bed side manner. He is sure that you know exactly what you are getting yourself into. I have seen him twice. My overall opinion is that he is sensible and extremely well qualified to carry out this surgery. I am very glad he is doing mine.
