Jeffrey Nicastro Bariatric Surgeon M.D.
Dr. Nicastro was wonderful throughout the entire process. I met with him my first surgical consult and he was very easy to talk to and not at all judgemental. You never felt rushed while talking to Dr. Nicastro. He clearly explained the surgery, risks and complications and gave an honest assessment of whether or not the surgery was for me.rnrnOn the actual date of my surgery, both Dr. Nicastro and Dr. McMullen were in the operating room. I would say they both were very nice to me and honestly, Dr. Nicastro's level of surgical competence could not be beat.
I am very happy with my surgical team! I say team because my success is not the result of one person only. At Staten Island University Hospital Center for Surgical Obsesity it is a team effort that makes this program successful!rnDr.'s Coppa, Nicasto & McMullen are all fine surgons who are ver competent. I would highly reccommend them!
Dr. Nicastro is a very straight forward person. Someone I could definately relate to and work with on any and all procedures needed that will lead up to my gastric bypass procedure.rnrnI ended up with Dr. Nicastro after the first hospital (LIJ) decided they couldn't take care of my procedures and needs anymore.rn
I was mpressed at first. He was intelligent and explained the procedure well. His staff seemed educated about it and they seemed to want to convey the risks. My one problem was with the aftercare. I had complications about one month out. I didn't find them caring enough. I felt almost like a bother to them. When I was put into a long term care facility, no one ever contacted me to see how I was doing. I felt relly abandoned. Therefore, I was not pleased with the aftercare. The risks were addressed, but didn't cover my complication. So, I was sort of left to the wayside. He was a fair surgeon, but I felt he may have missed something when I had a problem. Who knows? I've successfully lost 207 lb. to date, I'm not complaining.
I found him to be very confident. His office staff is wonderful. There isn't anything I don't like about him. He offers excellent aftercare and requires you to go through a very thorough education process. His office has a nutritionist who was very informative as far as what to eat and why, and the nurse practioner has been extremely helpful and available for any questions or problems I had, which thankfully were few.
Dr. Nicastro was very clear that this is a very serious procedure and not to be undertaken unless you have tried all other ways to lose weight. He let me know all the possible complications, was very clear about the risks but also let me know about his positive success rates.
I think Dr. Nicastro is a very competent, and kind, surgeon, and feel very lucky that I found him.
When I met Dr. Nicastro, he was everything I had expected. He is very upfront and direct in his information and description of the details of the surgery. I found him to be a very compassionate and caring surgeon, that made me feel more like a friend than a patient. I left our meeting feeling very confident in my choice of surgeon. I have gotten the feel that many people do not like to hear ALL the goods and bads that he must speak of, but he gives the facts and does not sugarcoat the details. He definitely prepares you with all the information that you need to know before making the differcult decision to proceed onto having the surgery. I was extremely pleased with my meeting with him and found his office staff to be very professional and friendly in all our dealings. I look forward to a long and wonderful relationship with his office and their aftercare Post-op group meetings.
He was very informative. He took time out to meet with me and my husband and explain the procedure in great detail and then answer any questions we had. He addressed all the risks of surgery and explained them to me in great detail so that I could make an informed decision.
His office staff is wonderful. Any time I called with a question or concern they were always very eager to help me.
United Surgical Associates stresses after care a great deal. They have a very structured after care program including support group meetings.
The only thing I was disappointed about was that I was not informed how painful this surgery would be. I asked several times and they compared it to a c-section. It was nothing like my c-sections. But do not let this discourage you. They pain goes away and the results are so worth it.
I had my surgery consultation with Dr. Macura on 8/6/02 and I found him to be straight-to-the-point doctor who wasn't the friendliest man on the planet, but he was confident in his craft, honest, and very informative. His office staff were not the typical WLS office staff, running around with no time to even speak to the patient. I really enjoyed the visit.
Recently I met with his assisting surgeon Dr. Nicastro. Wow, is he a cutie! LOL... Seriously though, I found his straightforward and personable. He put me at ease about the surgery, its complications, and the recovery process. A great team!
NOTE: Dr. Macura is no longer with Staten Island University Hospital and I have chosen to continue with Dr. Nicastro as my after-care surgeon.
My surgery was actually with Dr. Jerzy Macura, with Dr. Nicastro assisting. Dr. Macura is now working out of Brooklyn at Maimonedies Medical Center. Dr. Nicastro now head the bariatric surgical team at Staten Island University Hospital.
Dr. Nicastro's credentials are exemplary. He is very straightforward, and some can conceive him to be harsh, almost cold. I personally think the guy is a straightshooter, and honest, and that's what I think is important in a surgeon. People need to hear the realities of this surgery, and not be coddled. The Staff and program at SIUH are great, the hopsital staff during my surgical stay were uncomonly caring and attentive.
SIUH Bariatric program aftercare offers weekly meetings, and a great support staff. Even though Macura has gone to Brooklyn, and I live in Brooklyn, I've chosen to stay with the SIUH program.
Dr. Nicastro is very honest about the risks of surgery, almost to the point of scaring you. I think it is to test your resolve, and a way for him to see if you're really ready to do it, and will be serious about your commitment after surgery.
Dr. Nicastro also has an extensive background in the emergency room, and high-risk surgery, so I felt safe in his hands.
I guess many would say his surgical competance is better than his bedside manner, but I was at ease with both, and would reccomend him highly, and without reservation
