J. Barry McKernan Bariatric Surgeon

Dr. McKernan is a kind, compassionate surgeon who truly understands addiction to food. He has a rye sense of humor and always has a smile for patients. He is a straight shooter and makes his expectations clear before proceeding with surgery. While he does RNY and Lap-band he prefers all laparoscopic procedures. He has a great aftercare support group led my the nutritionist and the psychologist. The office staff here is tops. Kelly, who works with insurance is a real fighter for patients and gets things done quickly. I have already recommended this surgeon to many friends. The only down side I can think of is that Dr. McKernan is not a "hand-holder". He expects you to follow the rules and when you don't, he doesn't have much to say to you.

Well I have a surgery date October 29th. I can't believe they were ready to do the surgery only days after my approval from the ins. co. I got approved on Wednesday the 24th and they were ready to do surgery on the 1st. little over a week away. I had to pick something later that month and they were wonderful about it. The only thing bad I can say about everyone there and Dr. McKernan is that I can't find much information about him. I would like to be able to talk with some of his patients and see what they thought Post-Opp. Other than that there are no complaints here. He is a wonderful man, very smart and funny to boot.

I found everyone in the office to be very personable. I wasnt handed anything through the glass. The staff walked around into the waiting room to give me my information and papers to fill out. Each member of the staff made a point to come and shake my hand and introduce themselves. When I came back a week later to see the dietician the first thing out of the nurses mouth was "Where is Nicholas?" That's my son who came with me on my first visit. I thought it was wonderful that they remembered me and something about me. I have seen so many doctors who cant do that with a chart full of information right under their nose. When I was following the dietician back to a room I passed Dr. McKernan in the hall. He met me with a "Hello, Andrea" He had only met me one time. I was amazed. Maybe I have just had some really bad experiences in the past. But I feel totally comfortable with this doctor. I am glad I have found someone who so far has put me at ease, with an otherwise very nerve racking decision.

He is so funny, but mostly is is great. Six year ago he did some lapascopie surgery on my husband, of witch he was the first to do., it was such a good experiance, I went back to now to see him for my surgery. He explained about the lap band and what I could expect and that it would fix my reflux also. His staff is great and have been a pleasure to work with. This has happen so fast I could not believe it.Dr. Mckernan has the surgical competence, bedside mannerand he is funny and caring. You can not make a mistake with this man.I know you want to hear the bad too. its just not there. Oh! if you think your Dr. giving you a hug is bad, please don't go to this man. You might get one.
