My first impression of him was that he was so caring about his patients. Almost an intense (not going to happen to another one of my patients ) about any of the first problems that arose with his early patients!! Very dedicated in cluding the fact that he takes his time away from work to come to bariatric support meetings to answer any questions that patients don't seem to mind saying in from of others but don't remember to mention to him in his office.
He really really really emphasizes aftercare and support meetings to help YOU the patient be a success!! That's what he truly wants!!!!!!!!!!
Dr. Opie completely goes over the risks and answers ALL of YOUR questions !
I would recommend him in a minute!!He's a 10 !! IN EVERY WAY!!
First impression was very positive and it has remained the same. His office staff is competent and friendly. I have no negative observations about Dr. Opie.
Dr. Opie will give you as much time time as you require. If you have no questions or comments, his visits will be very brief. But he will take time as long as you need more information.
He strongly emphasizes aftercare and participation in support groups. Both exist at his office/Olathe Medical Center.
Surgical risks are addressed through thorough education and testing including psychological eval, nighttime oximetry, labs, etc.
I would rate him 10 overall (competence 10, bedside manner 9)
I had already been to see Dr. Hitchcock at Shawnee Mission hospital, but my insurance didn't cover him. So I checked with Aetna and discovered Dr. Opie. My first impression? He was very friendly, professional and knowledgeable. I asked him point blank why he chose to do bariatric surgery. He answered, after thinking for a moment, that it was the one surgery where he could actually see major results and such a positive change in the patient's life; also, it was a challenging surgery for him (he does most of them laproscopically, which is a real plus)and he liked that challenge.
I was impressed with his candor and my impression hasn't changed over the 10 months since my surgery. Like someone said, he looks you right in the eye and tells you succinctly about anything you want to know. Some people may not like that directness, but I found it refreshing.
I had some strange complications due to meds I was taking, which puzzled him at first, but he brought in some experts and finally got me out of the hospital. My stay in the hospital and recovery was longer than most, but he was with me every step of the way!
He greatly emphasizes aftercare, with 3 and then 6 month extensive bloodwork to check your nutrient levels, and a great support group. The office staff is professional, responding to my calls within the same day and getting me in quickly if I'm having a problem. At first, I wasn't so sure about his scheduler, but I have come to like her a lot. I would rate him a 9.5 out of 10, just because nobody's perfect! He's a highly competent surgeon and a very caring man.
MY FIRST IMPRESSION OG DR. OPIE WAS GOOD. HE SEEMED VERY CARING AND CONCERNED ABOUT OBESITY. THE OFFICE AT MIDWEST SURGICAL IS VERY FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL.
MY PCP REFERRED ME TO HIM WITH VERY HIGH REGARDS. SHE SAID SHE WOULD TRUST HIM 100% IF SHE WAS UNDER THE KNIFE.
HE IS VERY ADAMENT ABOUT AFTERCARE AND MAKING ALL OF YOUR POST-OP APPT.
HE EXPLAINED ALL RISKS OF SURGERY SEVERAL TIMES. HE WAS VERY THOROUGH.
I WOULD RATE DR OPIE A 9 OUT OF 10!
HIS SURGICAL COMPETENCE IS GREAT AND BEDSIDE MANNER PRETTY GOOD AS WELL.
My first impression was he was very knowledgeable, caring and considerate. I still feel that way till this day. He is very commited to getting gastric bypass surgery recognized and approved. Granted I have only been to one surgeon, but Dr. Opie and his staff are all amazing! I went thru one hell of an ordeal with the insurance company and Dr. Opie and his staff not only managed to get get me scheduled for the surgery before the end of the year , but got it worked out with their nutritionist for a private meeting so that I could get in the mandatory pre/post op class which was required before the surgery date. Dr. Opie discussed with me all the pre and post op expectaions and possible complications and on my final consultation with him, I had to take a true or false quiz, which he goes over with you even if you get the questions wrong or right. He wants to make sure you are well informed. I would highly recommend seeing Dr. Opie.
I met Dr. Harlan Opieat a WLS Support group meeting earlier this month. After meeting him, I felt even more confident and comfortable with my decision to have him as my surgeon He really knows his stuff and seems very personable.
What impressed me most, though, is that he really tries to advocate for the obese. He has been visiting companies to talk to Benefits decision makers about why it's so important to include WLS services in whatever insurance coverage they carry. I think he also plans to address lawmakers in Topeka (or was it J City?) while decisions are being made about how to handle the obesity issue, now that it has been designated as a disease.
Meeting with Dr. Opie in private consulation has only confirmed my earliest impressions of him.
I am having some trouble getting Dr. Opie's office to submit my paperwork to my insurance company. That's adding to my stress level. I wrote a letter though to Karen in scheduling and she was very quick in responding to my request after that.
My first impression of Dr. Opie was that he seemed extremely knowledgeable and was a great source of information regarding the questions asked of him. That impression has only been strengthened throughout the times I've interacted with him. The office staff was very professional and always addressed my issues in a short period of time. Doc O has his own time zone. It is pretty much parallel to everyone else's, but sometimes differs by as much as 20 minutes, however, I am pretty sure he wouldn't show up late for dinner. He has made me thoroughly aware of my responsibilities concerning my aftercare. I know that I will have follow-up appointments and blood drawn frequently to make sure that I am meeting my nutritional requirements. My short term and long term diets have been explained to me and reinforced with printed material to use as a reference. He has identified and we have discussed surgical risks from the possibility of re-operation in the short and long term to the worst imaginable possibility of death. Mostly these are risks involved with anyone having any surgery, but they are not treated as such in his mind. They are very real possibilities and he and his staff will make every effort to ensure none of these risks are encountered. Doc O is the only surgeon I've seen regarding the surgery. He came highly recommended to me, and I, in turn, recommend him wihtout hesitation. I'm not sure how many other bariatric surgeons are in this region, but I doubt that they could be more knowledgeable or be a more decent and caring person to have in charge of my surgical needs.
Doc O...send the cash to my home address, you have it on file!!
