Gregory Pittman Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.
Clear, concise and competent
First visit was simple and he was very clear about what I could expect. After the surgery I could tell that he really didn't have a lot of experience with the procedure because of the poor advice he gave me about diet, etc.
THe staff is very good and helpful. I thought that Dr. Pittman is a nice man but not as encouraging as a doctor should be.
I don't think he is still doing this surgery.
I'd rate him very high. The nice thing about him is that he does many other kinds of surgery and later on, I needed an emergency surgery and he did an awesome job.
He is a great surgeon, not a bad bedside manner, but merely ok.
Dr. Pittman saved my life! I can never thank him enough for the gift he has given me. I know it was my hard work that made this work for me, but without him it wouldn't have happened. He is kind, thoughtful, and an excellent surgeon. He really cares about his patients. One time he said the Bariatric patients were his favorites because they are almost always happy and each visit there is something to celebrate. My pre-op visits were informative and well planned. Once I decided to have the surgery my consultations were of utmost importance to him. He is careful to ensure his patients are in as good a shape as possible before surgery. He doesn't sugar coat anything. After my surgery the follow-up was excellent. There is a support group and I have made good friends there that have helped me deal with the ups and downs of post WLS life. Dr. Pittman's or his nurse were always just a phone call away 24 hours a day. She is a post-op WLSer herself and that was so helpful. I know they encourage people to say something bad about their experience, but there isn't anything bad to say.
Unfortunately due to Oklahoma's ridiculously high Mal-Practice rates he is no longer doing WLS of any kind. Hopefully someday the system will be brought under control and he can once again help people like me. Thanks Dr. P!
I have only met him once. I appreciated that I was seen for my initial visit very quickly. Everyone is really nice. I visited another local Dr. and really did not like being treated like a heard of animals or something. Dr. Pittman spent a lot of time with me going over things. I did not feel pressured. He seemed confident that things will go well. He does not have a whole lot of experience with this type surgery compared to other doctors but I felt better knowing that if I have complications, he will handle those and not refer me out.
I thought he was kind and emphathetic and he visted me at least twice a day.
Dr Pittman is a great surgeon. He has a good staff too, especially Karen. In all my research before my lapband surgery, I found only good things about Dr Pittman. He is well respected in the medical community as well as by his former patients. The only negative thing I ever heard about him was that he was a perfectionist, but I considered that a good thing with him doing my surgery.
Now three months after surgery, my impression of him has only strengthen.
Intially I was referred to Dr. Gary Decker. The first available appt. was 6 weeks after I broached the subject with my PCP, Dr. Tom Mihelich. Dr. Decker as both informative and attentive to my questions and concerns. Somewhere along the line, Dr. Decker decided not to pursue bariatric surgeries. So another referral was made to Dr. Greg Pittman. Thankfully it did not take another 6 weeks to get in to him. He entered the examination room 35 minutes after my scheduled time. To his credit, he had reviewed my history and was prepared to deal with the specifics of my case. He addressed the surgery and its risks and outlined what consults were indicated. One in particular stood out. Because I had a previous DVT, a filter would implanted the day prior to surgery. As of this writing (16 May 2003), Dr. Pittman is attempting to get my RNY approved for now rather than waiting for the end of the 6 month period (nominally 31 July 2003). There seems to be a bit of a disjoint between declaring something to be "medically necessitated" yet requiring a 6 month wait to get it. Time will tell.
I had met DR Pittman just about 2 years ago when he removed my gallbladder. When I decide to have the WLS, I called my insurance company for names of surgeons in my area who preform WLS, and was very very happy that DR Pittman was doing these now!
My impression was the same as the 1st time I had met him, he is great. Easy to talk to, I didn't feel "stupid" for asking any question that I had on my mind. He sat right down and I think he would have stayed there as long as I needed him to.
His office folks are great, I knew that from before, and the new ones are just as nice. Karen was right there on that 1st WLS visit making sure I knew she would be there for me, all I had to do was let her know I needed her. And now they have Darrel who I haven't met, but I have spoke to, and he seems just as caring and supportive.
Future patients should be ready to be treated with respect and understanding!
Karen and Darrel have answered any questions I've had about aftercare, and have give sugestion about after care. They also know that everyone is different. I rate that an A+ too!
They all talked to me about the risk, letting me know where I stood in those risk.
I would rate DR Pittman and his staff a 9+
I think surgical competence and bed side manner go hand in hand, I gotta have both.
My first impression of Dr. Pittman was excellent. He was friendly but professional, taking all the time required to answer questions in an honest and forthright manner. The front office staff was friendly and helpful. Karen is the R.N. who sort of coordinates everything and is absolutely fabulous. They are definately the "A" team. Dr. Pittman strikes me as a bit of a perfectionist ( a good thing in a surgeon). He has a reputation as a very skilled surgeon, and I am pleased to have him on my team.
