Initially I was very nervous going through the process to get gastric bypass surgery. I had never had surgery before and although I was overweight, I was an active and fairly healthy overweight young professional. I had my surgery on July 26th of 2016 with Dr. Donald Hess at BMC and I could not be more pleased about it. He definitely is a great surgeon, I was walking and having the pain well managed within 1hr after surgery, from there on it has been improvement day after day. I feel that my surgery has been a great success as a result of picking the right surgeon and doing exactly what you are told to do after surgery. I can confidently say that Dr. Hess was wonderful about answering all my questions prior to surgery and making sure that I was at ease about the procedure. He is extremely professional and approachable. I would highly recommend him as your bariatric surgeon if you are in the Boston area.
I had WLS in NY in 2004. Married in 2005, and moved to MA. In 2007 I suffered a miscarriage and suddenly developed severe stomach and intestinal pain. For a year I went from Dr to Dr, not getting any answers. Finally a Dr told me to go to Boston. My insurance provider highly recommended Dr. Hess. Made an appointment, and within minutes he knew what had been the cause of my pain. I had an internal hernia. He fixed it right away. Shortly after having the surgery I was expecting again. I now have 2 children and see Dr Hess and his awesome team for follow up care. Since day one they have all been so caring. Treating me like a friend not just a patient. I could have died because my hernia had gone on so long without treatment. It was also the cause of my miscarriage. Thanks to this teammy hhusband and I were able to have a family. Dr Hess will also take his time. My surgery should have lasted a short time. He took 4 hours, exploring, making sure he caught all the issues that needed fixing. I can't say enough good things. The best Dr and the best team.
I worked closely with Dr. Hess and all his staff for many months before receiving my surgery on September 27, 2011. I would 100% recommend him. Dr. Hess, Tony, Ty, Sharon, and all of them are amazing. The hospital is not the best but they definitely make up for it. Dr. Hess is very competent, very patient, and very kind. Tony is 1 in a million. Other then the hospital I had/have no issues at all with them. ?

I had my surgery in Dec. 2010. As far as the hospital; I wasn't so impressed. I think you have to act as you own advocate to make sure you are getting the meds. you are taking. I gave them a list of my meds and had a bad experience with my blood pressure because one of my meds wasn't being given to me. I finally nfigured it out for myself.
As far as Dr. Hess He is the best. He and his team; especially Tony ( my guardian angel) will do anything they can to get to the bottom if there is a problem. They assure you that good things in time will come out of this. I believe in them whole heartedly. I love all of you; Keep up the good work. Excellent job done. I must mention Wendy(dietician) Hun Your the best. Let the good times roll; LOL

I had my first appointment with Dr. Hess and his team in May of 2010., I was very pleased to find out how thorough the whole team was...I was/am very pleased with the outcome of my first visit and all of the information that was given to me regarding the whole process from beginning to end i.e., possible complications, long term outcome, pre/post operative diet and most important group sessions with Tony, from the first day of meeting with both Dr. Hess and Tony I felt more at ease regarding the surgery. I am also very pleased with my Nutritionist Ms Gallager and Dietitian Ms Apovian the whole team is in sync with my personal needs and consult with each other as well as give the best possible solutions for your diet health i.e., portion size, food/drink consumption amounts, and or possible substitutions..."this is great" because most of us need to know exactly how much of what to take and or eat by actually seeing the size/amount to be taken..like for example they explained that after the surgery we need at least 50 to 60 grams of Protein daily, abviously the more the better and you ask yourself well how much is that exactly..well they actually show you...and say if you eat this and that and this many times a day that will take care of your Protein intake for the day....lol I am confident in Dr Hess and his team to do right by me during surgery and to help me do right by myself after surgery....Although I am still a bit jittery about the "actual day the surgery is done" I am at eas and confident in the fact that Dr. Hess will do a great Job. I will Keep you posted in my progress. "I have faith and love in my God, he is a loving and generous God, my life is in his hands and he will see me through this just fine"
