I chose Dr. Pohl because of his reputation. I was not looking for bedside manner or personality because those things are not as important to me, although Dr. Pohl is good in those areas too. The office staff is very friendly and helpful ALWAYS, although on a couple of occasions I have had to spend way too much time in the waiting room (over an hour one time and 1 1/2 hours another time). Just came from there this morning where I went right in, so it is not consistent. I liked all of the physicians he referred me to pre-op. He has a good rapport with the nutritionists, and they have been great. The information I received from Dr. Pohl both at the seminar and in writing were very helpful. I refer back to the packet often to refresh myself. I did not love Roger Williams Hospital, but it was just one night! I would make all of the same decisions again, and I would highly recommend Dr. Pohl. I just met his assistant, Jeremy, this morning and I liked him also.
I really think I've chosen the best surgeon I could have for my surgery. Dr. Pohl seems to be very committed to the idea that people make an informed choice and have the best possible outcome. So far, I can honestly say that the worst problem I've encountered is that, due to him being so busy, it is hard to get appointments in a faster time frame.
My first impression was that he seemed to really know his \"stuff\". He was very nice the first time i saw him. The 2 other times i saw him seemed to be betther than the first because it was at these points that i was ready for my surgery. The last time (a few weeks ago) was probably the most humor i saw from him because i told him i got sick and tired of the insurance companies and that im paying for it myself. He seemed really interested in knowing how i was paying for it. Maybe shocked that i just came to this decision. His office staff was good. I usually like to deal with only the office manager after one bad phone call with one of the office staff that was very rude to me on the phone. (We'll just chalk that up to having a bad day) rnrn--i'll be able to comment more after i have the surgery on march 4th!
Dr. Pohl had a wonderful bedside manner. He was very polite and sensitive to your weight issues. He had no problems answering any of my questions. This has not changed since my first meeting with him. His office staff are some of the nicest girls you'll ever meet! They are all so sweet and really great girls! As far as the care he provides, you must attend a pre-seminar where you learn about the surgery itself. When you go to visit him he will put you on atleast a 2 week diet where you are allowed protein shakes and a small dinner. This diet may be more considering your weight. For me, myself it was 4 weeks long. You must see your dietitian 2 weeks after surgery along with your surgeon and you will be visiting with all of these people for the rest of your life. This is not just a one time bottaboom kind of thing. You will also be required (so to speak) to attend the monthly post-op group. He address' all the risks of the surgery both in the seminar prior to your meeting and again when you meet him the first time. I would rate him on the scale of 1-10 a 9. The reason I say a 9 is he is VERY busy and hard to initally see. Otherwise he himself is a 10+! He is wonderful at everything he does and I would recommend him to anyone in the area looking to do this surgery!
04/29 11:22 AMrnAfter doing all the research and talking to OH, I came to the conclusion that I wanted a doctor that had the credentials of “ Center of Excellence” according to the American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASBS). Dr. Pohl fit into that criteria. After attending 2 of his meetings, and eliminating other programs, I decided his program is the one I wanted to be part of. I knew this would be hard, since I was coming down from NH, but I knew anything good doesn’t come easy, including this surgery!! Well, I am almost 3 weeks out from RNY surgery and I know this was the best decision of my life!! Dr. Pohl is the best surgeon I have ever had. I have had quite a few in the past, but he is hands down the best. He is very straight forward, he doesn’t hold anything back and that is important since this is such a complicated and serious surgery! He will spend at much time as you need of him. He has a dry sense humor that is quite enjoyable! He explains everything quite clearly and his meetings are hands down the best and most comprehensive I have ever attended, and I have attended quite a few during the decision process! My surgery was on 4/10/07 and it went so very smoothly and my recovery was very quick. I was back to work in a week!! The Roger Williams Hospital was great! The staff was awesome and my stay was just smooth as can be. I would not only recommend Dr. Pohl to any of my family or friends for WLS, but for any general surgery they might need! I asked every nurse I met at RW before, during and after surgery, what they thought of Dr. Pohl and every single one of them said they trust only Dr. Pohl to do this surgery for them! They spoke so very highly of him it was impressive! They all said that he not only is a great surgeon, but he treated them with utmost respect and the other surgeons didn’t. That just spoke huge of his ethics!! Patti
