Bruce Hardy Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.

I have had Dr Hardy for a couple surgeries and he has been wonderful. He is an excellent surgeon and has wonderful bedside manners. He truely cares for his patients. His aftercare is wonderful and his nursing staff esp. Jean are the best. I would highly recommend him and plan to use him again if needed.

Dr. Hardy was very impressionable. He appeared caring and interested in his patients. He made me feel welcome and that I was not just another client with $. Dr.Hardy's staff was friendly and open to anwering any questions I may have. They were also very supportive of my decisions.
When it came to the surgery Dr. Hardy was very informative and open to answering any questions. Dr. Hardy did reqire all his patients to attend an informed gastric bypass seminar hosted by the hospital prior to making an appointment.
I would rate Dr. Hardy overall for his competence and follow thru at an 8.

Dr. Bruce Hardy is a very upfront doctor. He doesn't beat around the bush yet is sensitive and caring about what he does have to say.
His staff is nothing but wonderful.
There is some aftercare(not much tho)...they send you home with a small book and some instructions. They do not have a dietician who follows up. Thank goodness for this site and my PCP reccommended a follow up dietician.
It has been a great experience overall. I did not have any complications at all.

My first impression of Dr. Bruce Hardy was how very professional he was yet, at the same time very personable and caring. That impression only grew stronger as the consultation went on. His nurse, Jean, whom I had spoken to a couple times on the telephone for about a total 1 1/2 hours, is absolutely wonderful and the most helpful person I have ever met in a physician's office ever. She let me know in advance what my insurance required before submitting for approval and thanks to her, I was able to bring all information with me at the time of my initial surgical consultation. My request will be submitted on 01/02/04. At this time, I can honestly say that there is nothing that I do not like about Dr. Hardy or his staff; they appear to be caring, capable, and compassionate, as well as quite knowledgeable and honest. The best thing you can do before you go for your initial consultation with Dr. Hardy, is speak with Jean, to find out what the insurance requirements are, so that you can have them ready to go as soon as possible for submission. Dr. Hardy advocates aftercare very strongly. All routine post-op visits for the first year following the procedure are at no charge to the patient. Dr. Hardy believes that there should be no reason to not keep your follow-up care appointments, so he eliminates the financial reason. Dr. Hardy gave me a pamphlet explaining the post-op diet and follow-up care guidelines that he requires us to comply with. Upon speaking of the risks of the surgery; Dr. Hardy was very open and honest about the fact that there are no guarantees and that there are always risks, which he outlines in great detail. He has performed 300+ Open Roux-en-Y(s) and has lost only 1 patient. This patient weighed over 700 pounds and died from a blood clot five months post-op. This patient had a medical history of blood clots and was an EXTREMELY high risk patient. Thus far in my journey, I would have to rate Dr. Hardy a 10+ on a scale of 1-10. Bedside manner in a surgeon is great, but surgical competence is the most important, and Dr. Hardy appears to have both.

I thought Dr. Hardy was one of the nicest people that I've ever met. He was caring and he really listened to you. He did a good exam to make sure that you were physically ready to handle the procedure. He was really sensitive to my hubby, too. From what I can tell he will have great bedside manner.
His after care program is great!!! For one year after the procedure he doesn't charge you for you follow up appointments. NONE of them. He wants to make sure that everyone one is getting great care no matter what. I think that is great! That shows that he really cares about his patients.

first impression: very warm and kind
impression change overtime: i feel the same way still as I did when I meet him.
staff: wonderful / kind
like best: his humor
future patients: they are in the best hands in all of IOWA
aftercare: a once a month check up
risks of surgery: yes, he very much talks about all the risks involved and asks you a ton of questions and finds out how much you actually know about the surgery itself as well.
rate him: 10 (10 being the highest)
He is the best surgeon I know, bedside manner is the best (came in twice a day to see me) so if there is another need to for surgery for me, I know who I will be seeing. won't trust my insides to anyone.

Dr. Hardy was very professional, but yet compassionate about my weight.
His office staff was all nice and helpful.
He really emphasizes how important it is to not lie in bed while you're in the hospital. Getting up and moving will get the best results. After getting home he pushed walking.
He explained all the risks from the surgery.
I was quite pleased with Dr. Hardy, and was impressed by the hospital nurses' opinions of him.

Dr. Hardy seems to be a very knowledgeable and friendly surgeon. He took time to answer my husband's questions as well as all of mine. His nurse, Jean, couldn't be more friendly and the office staff is always pleasant and friendly when I have called the office.
I can't think of a bad thing to say about him. He made sure that I had a good understanding of what he expected from me after the surgery. He reviewed the risks and possible complications and gave me his statistics. I would rate him very highly.

I didn't think I was going to be able to have the surgery due to my insurance (title 19 spendown). Dr. Hardy tried to prepare me and encouraged me to go on a strict 1000 cal/day diet and exercise. I couldn't follow that strict of a diet but did increase my activity level and cut down my intake. I was shocked when his nurse called to tell me I was approved about a month later! My surgery is scheduled for June 17, 2003. I'm excited and nervous and hope to have good news to report back!
