Beamer Breiling Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.
He has really spent a lot of time explaining and even drawing diagrams of every question I could throw at him. Smart man. Nice staff. A lot of funny ash trays in his office. It cracked me up.
3/29 It was a hard day when the doc's office called today to say they had to reschedule because the doc would be gone on vacation the following days we had scheduled for surgery. My husband had already taken off a week from work, which was very difficult, so then he had to do it again. It is "nobody's" fault, but a bit inconvenient.
5/4/00 One week post-op, and I am very pleased. Dr. Brieling was extremely supportive. Especially when my depression really hit hard in the hospital. I feel that with all the delays I had, he was really looking out for my best interests. I am very happy so far!!!
My first impression of Dr. Breiling was that here for the first time is someone that really understands and knows how I am feeling. Doc has always been sensitive to my needs and seems to really appreciate my concerns. I first met Dr. Breiling 2 years ago now. At that time he said I was a perfect candidate for VBG but the insurance company felt that I was persuing this type of treatment for "purely cosmetic reasons". I was devistated! Since I was in the process of starting a new business I decided to hold off and try weight watchers one more time, haven't we all said that before. I joined up for 4 months (I live in a small town and we don't have a regular group) and I lost a remarkable 60lbs.! When the 4 mos. was up the group disbanded and in 6 mos. I was heavier than ever! Then the weight related health problems started in. My insurance co. has spent thousands on my ankles, my knees, respiratory problems, and of course my high blood pressure. Finally my primary care physician got on the band wagon and sent my back to Dr. Breiling, almost 2 years to the day after my first visit. Between them they got my surgery approved and scheduled in an amazing 3 weeks time. The day Dr. Breilings' staff called me with the NEWS was one of the happiest in my life.
Dr. Breiling was very thorough with my pre-surgery eduacation. I had lots of reading materials, informative talks, and videos before he even submitted the request to the insurance co.. I knew approximately how long my hospital stay would be, I knew that no matter how uncomfortable I was post op I had to get up and move, I was told that there was no need for me to feel pain that there were drugs for me, etc.. In other word my Doctor was the best.
I was in the Hospital for a total of a week, one day was before the surgery. Dr. Breiling saw me every day while I was in, as did an associate of my primary care physicians' office, and I was kept informed of any and all developements. Post op all of my questions were answered quickly and frankly, something I really appreciated.
Since I came home I've been to Dr. Breilings office for 2 checkups, and yesterday,10 days post op, he removed the last of my external staples. I go back in one week. He already has me on soft foods, but said next week ha might add some meats. No baby foods!
Overall I would rate Dr. Breiling as excellent! excellent! EXCELLENT!
His surgical competence seems great, I'm here aren't I?, and I have a dandy scar (very neatly done I might add), and I feel great, and more hopeful than I have been in years!
Dr. Breilings bedside manner was fantastic. He and his nurse came in every day smiling, joking, and obviously happy to be there. He made me feel as though he had done this proceedure a million times, and that I was his only patient. He made me feel special, and I really needed that.
The only negative thing I have to say is why do the nurses always want to move your IV at 2 a.m.? And why do they let student nurses ATTEMPT to do it? It took them 6 tries, count them 6 tries, to move my IV when I finally insisted on someone experienced be allowed to do it, this was after an hour of botched attempts that left me bruised and a bit needle paranoid!!!
Dr Breiling and his staff is great! I've talked to other's who had him as their surgeon and they also have been very happy with him. He is on the Bariatric Board, and has done numerous VBG procedures. Dr Breiling and is very informative and before he even signs you up for surgery he has you come in for three separte appointments and once you decide to have the surgery he makes sure to do blood test, EKG, chest exrays ect. His nurse Kayleen (sp) is great also, she also takes all the time needed to make sure all your questions and concerns are answered. Dr Breiling has a great bedside manner, after my surgery he took time to explain the whole procedure to my mother, then again to my father! I would highly recommend him and his staff to anybody in Iowa that may be thinking of VBG surgery!
I was very impressed with Dr Breiling he was so inforatived and answered my questions. His staff has always been helpful with all my question and paperwork. In the hospital my family and friends were also quite impressed with him. After surgery he went out and talked to them telling them my outcome and what to expect in the future. While I was in the hospital he was there every day to check up on me (I'm not sure if thats normal or not). He's very personable and kind. I would recommend him to anyone. So far so good.
I think he's wonderful. He really makes sure that you understand totally the procedure and is very supportive. He also spends all the time you need when you visit. His staff is wonderful and very helpful. I would refer everyone to him. He's an excellent doctor and surgeon.
I can't pick which is better is surgical competence or bedside manner - they are both great.
