Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch
Dr. Baltasar has a wonderful reputation with his patients, and is well-recognized internationally. When I determined that I would have to look outside of Canada for a surgeon, my research stopped when I learned all about this man. He has been very kind and informative in his emails to me and I have 100% confidence in his skills. I will add more post-surgery!
Nov 11 2002 -- got home from Spain late last night...recovering very well. Dr. Baltasar is an angel. His skills really are top-notch. I've had no post-op complications so far other than some diaherra. He completed my open DS in less than 80 minutes, and had me up and walking that night. I saw him daily, often 3 times/day while in the hospital, and expect to be in email contact with him for the next while, as he likes to have follow-up reports on his patients' progress and well-being. He is a very kind man, with excellent counseling skills and the warmest bed-side manner I have ever encountered in a health-care professional. I can't recommend him highly enough -- Dr. B is the best! I truly have NOTHING negative to say about him or his staff...
Dr. Baltasar was wonderful. He is a highly-skilled surgeon and highly-regarded in the field of bariatric surgery. Just as importantly, he is a genuinely warm, caring, and compassionate human being. All of his patients on his yahoo support group rave about him so much that you wonder if he could possibly live up to his reputation. He does. I worked for many years in health care, some of them as an Operating Room Technician. I have a low opinion of physicians in general, surgeons in particular. I am not easily impressed by them, but I instantly liked and trusted Dr. Baltasar. He is quite unlike any surgeon you are likely to find in the US.
Very kind , very dedicated very experienced He had a wonderful bedside manner. He held my hand and talked gently to me . as I lay on the opperating table waiting for the anestesia to do its thing. He only improved in my sight. Other americans who went to spain had raved about him. He lived up to his billing.I did not deal with his office staff all communication was directly with him he is completely bilengual and we emailed information directly to each otherhe is very prompt in replying.Future patients should know that while surgery in Spain is much cheaper than in the Usa this surgeon is 1st rate .He does hundreds of these surgeres with a very competent team.aand he comes to the Usa to share His inovations with other surgeons. He pioneered a suturing and stapling technique that has saved lives around the world. He specializes in the Duodenal Switch.Since he is in Spain he turns us over to our PCP for after care . We are free to contact him on Email with any questions or concerns. In case of problems he will call the usa dr.incharge and deal with it long distance. when we arrived at the hospital he met with us ,Gave us a paper to read explaining the risks of surgery Left us to read over it and came back to answer any questions about the risks, before I signed the paper stating I understood the risks .This surgeon gets an A+ in both surgical competence and bedside manner. He comes to visit in the hospital 3 times a day.
I was most impressed by his extensive experience with this procedure, and that suturing teckniques he uses were adopted by the US doc becuase they have decreased post op leaks.
He stays in touch with his pts via email--very efficiently. He also will talk with your doc in the states to make sure everyone is on the same page with your care.
Going this route puts much more responsibility on the pt. to make sure you've done your homework and are prepared for the post up followup.
I will let you know more when I meet him in person.
