  • About Me
      Dr. Telem graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and Jefferson Medical College. She completed her surgical training at The Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York and her fellowship in Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Telem also completed a Masters in Public Health in the Executive Masters of Healthcare Management program at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. Dr. Telem’s clinical practice is devoted to innovative, advanced minimally invasive therapies focused on hernia treatment, benign diseases of the esophagus and morbid obesity. She currently serves as the Director of the Michigan Comprehensive hernia program which is dedicated to the treatment of abdominal wall, groin and diaphragmatic hernia. She has directed numerous national and local educational courses dedicated to resident and faculty education in these disciplines. Dr. Telem holds key leadership positions and committee memberships in several national societies including SAGES, the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), Americas Hernia Society (AHS), and the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Her service in these organizations is focused on research, quality and patient safety. She has received both national and local recognition for her dedication to research and education including several medical student teaching awards, the David Dreiling Award for Excellence in scholarly activity, the SAGES Researcher in Training award, and the SAGES Young Researcher Award. Research Interests Dr. Telem’s academic interests lie in health services research with a focus on development and implementation of innovative solutions to healthcare delivery for the express purpose of improving patient outcomes. She currently holds a Career Development Award as well as grant funding from the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) to further this work. Additionally, she performs funded translational research in hernia investigating tissue remodeling in hernia repair. Her research and commentaries have been published in prominent journals including JAMA, Annals of Surgery, and Surgical endoscopy.
