One the biggest fears I had with Gastric Bypass surgery was the mortality rate. When I first met Dr. Chapman two things changed the way I approached WLS, mentally and emotionally: 1) He was straight forward and spoke his mind. 2)He was confident and reassuring. He discussed what would happen and what to expect. I didn't even need to ask questions from my prepared list. Following my surgery, I looked at my small scars. I smiled at how great I felt and when Dr. Chapman came to visit, I said \" Dr. Chapman, they said you have gifted hands. I believe they are right.\" Beware however, he is so busy and so requested, don't be insulted that he has fellows and other staff who work with him - and you. But, they more than make up for the fast moving Dr. Chapman. I personally feel very fortunate.

My first impression: What a caring man! He actually cares about every patient that walks in the door. He was hopeful about me having the RNY. I actually cried that day. He told me about requesting the majority of his patients to lose weight before the surgery. I thought he was crazy, because I didn't think that I could do it. Dr. Chapman said, \"You loved yourself enough to walk through that door and say you needed my help. I can help you help yourself starting now.\" rnMy impression of him has not changed! He is still an amazing, caring, and very strong doctor.rnHis staff is fantastic! They all work together with the same goal, to get you healthy and to help change your life for the better.rnI can't say anything bad about Dr. Chapman or his staff.rnWhat you need to know: He is a tough Dr. He demands the best of you. He is encouraging, but he is also stern. If you slip, he'll let you know.rnWith my case, his follow up from surgery was incredible. He was there in my room every morning for rounds, and his residents stopped by at different times during the day. His aftercare is structured, and easy to follow. His staff calls you up to check up on you. rnI was well prepared for the surgery. My family was at ease with the procedure and the follow up care. rnHe has a wealth of knowledge, a caring heart, and the best team all around. I was truely blessed with choosing him for my surgeon

I learned of Dr. Chapman on the internet site for the Bariatrics program at The Brody School of Medicine. He performed the RNY on the site and I was very impressed with his confidence and competence. When I call to inquire, the staff treated me like a family member returning home. He has been very professional, very thorough, very informative, and very patient. :) His staff and aftercare program is very reassuring and professional. He was very frank about the benefits and risks of the surgery, and the prognosis if I did or did not have the surgery. I have every confidence in him and am thankful to be in his hands tomorrow morning, when I have my surgery. I think it is important to be competent, professional, balanced with a caring friendly, firm and frank manner. He is all of these things.rn

My first impression of Dr. Chapman was that he was a very skilled surgeon, not just in bariatrics. He is my husband's surgeon (for colorectal cancer). Dr. Chapman and his staff have always been upfront and very honest with both of us. rnrnDr. Chapman is a very busy physician but will stop and talk/answer questions that you have; just be prepared when he comes in the room. rnrnAftercare is extremely important for WLS patients and he is very upfront about that with his patients. If you are not going to follow the program, then think twice about having this surgery. Only you can make it a success. No one can do that for you.rnrnThe risks of the surgery were discussed in detail several times prior to surgery. It was mandatory that your support person attend one of these visits. Everything was explained to my husband and he was given the opportunity to ask questions and feel comfortable with my decision to have WLS.rnrnI would rate Dr. Chapman and his staff a 10 out of 10!rnYou won't go wrong with him.rn

I met my surgeon last August. He was very blunt and to the point. He told me exactly what he expected out of me and what I was in for. I percieved him to be very professional. His staff is very professional also and they were sure to let me know they were there for any questions I had. There is nothing I didn't like about my surgeon, if I did I'm not so sure I would trust him to perform my surgery, but I do. He strongly emphasized the care I need before AND after surgery, leaving out any unanswered questions. They have a very well structured aftercare program that I am definitely going to follow. He told me all my risks whether I decide or not decide to do this. Overall on a scale of 10 I would rate Dr. Chapman a 10. Surgical competence is very important, if you cant believe in someone why would you trust him/her with your life?

Dr.Chapman is a nice very down to earth tell it like it is man.when i went for my 2 week check -up i saw one of his partners but i heard him drop something in the hallway and he said aw shit i about died laughing he is so funny. also he was extremley busy and he stop what he was doing to come take a picture with me that is how much he cares about his patients i have not one bad thing to say about him.The office staff is great they answer any question you have even the embarrassing ones!Dr.Chapman and his staff try their hardest to let you know what needs to be done and how it needs to be done to keep you healthy. You must walk walk walk they keep telling me even after 6 weeks you are at risk of blood clots so anyone wanting to have this surgery remember it isn't a walk in the park!.....well actually it is as far as walking is concerned. e-mail if you want to know anything else [email protected]

**update. Sorry to see Dr. Chapman has joined Southern Surgical. When I questioned someone as to why, the directed me to the NC Medical Board proceeding. I will recommend you d the same.

I really like Dr. Chapman and actually tried to see in around 2014 to discuss the toll that Gabapentin has done to my successful weight loss and what could be done know due to the rapid weight gain because of the medicine. Unfortunately he was put that day (ECU Physicians did not call me) and I saw a Dr. Harper. He knew of the medicine's side effect. Unfortunately, I never saw Chapman. I would be greatly concerned now after reading the Board's report.

Maybe once he has established himself again with a long and good track record, I might try to go talk to him.

Dr. Chapman is very good at what he does and explains everything very clearly and carefully to make sure you understand exactly what to expect. I would highly recommend him to anyone considering WLS.
