Vincent Frering is probably one of the most experienced gastric band surgeons in the world. Technically he is brilliant and would achieve a good result where others might fail or not even make an attempt.

He's typically French, so if you're looking for that somewhat patronising bedside manner that many surgeons have then he's not your man, however, if you are looking for a surgeon who knows his onions and will achieve what you want with a minimum of fuss and very quickly then he's for you. His attitude is pragmatic and his response to most hurdles is 'it is not a problem', usually said with a gallic shrug.

I have the greatest respect for him and his team who are dedicated to him - which says a lot.

Aftercare is an issue because you either have to return to him, which is not a problem if you're happy to make the trip to Lyon every time, or find a fill practitioner locally. Fortunately I have a fantastic fill practitioner in the UK, Sharon Bates, who is both expert and very caring. In addition she has the added benefit of being banded herself, so knows all the pitfalls.

The hospital, Clinique Sauvegarde, is pretty good, though obviously language barriers can sometimes prove a stumbling block. This may mean that care is at best efficient without any of the touchy feely stuff. My advice is to get a good translator or take someone with you who speaks French. I speak French so it wasn't an issue with me.

On a scale of one to ten I would rate him eleven for technical brilliance and six for bedside manner - (interesting I note that most people who have reviewed him like his bedside manner) which is probably redressed a bit by the fact that he's very good looking!

Very professional.

Became even more impressed with him, his skill and compassion.

Very friendly and helpful.

What's not to like?

He is very caring and probably the most experienced band sureon in the world, having implanted between 3,000 and 4,000 bands.

Stresses that aftercare is essential for success of the band.

Yes; however, he's in France and I'm in U.S. - aftercare comes from U.S. doctors.

Complications are extremely rare.

With 10 being tops, he's a 30!

Both! Extremely skilled surgeon with compassion and concern beyond compare.

I will meet him the day before surgery. So many others have sung his praises. He is a leader in this field and I have every confidence in him.

I have only had email contact so far but everything I've learned so far has been good. He's answered all my questions in a timely manner. He has performed over 3000 of these surgeries. He also helped design the "MID" Band. He's known all over Europe for this surgery and I have great confidence in him.

Dr. Frering is extremely well regarded in the European community. He speaks excellent English. He has done over 3000 AGB surgeries... more than any other surgeon I've been able to find. He is very busy but I have heard he does not keep his patients waiting. However, his preop communication is less than optimal. It is best to call his office as he has not responded to my emails. I have been able to get right through when calling his office, however. His office staff (at least the woman I spoke to on my first call) does not speak English. I understand from some of his other patients that most of his nurses do and I do not anticipate any problems communicating while in the hosptal.
