Dr. Jose Luis Curiel Marchena  was born August 23, 1964 in Ensenada, Mexico. He studied medicine in the University of Guadalajara and specialized in General Surgery in Mexico City. He attended multiple courses and bariatric training programs.  He started performing surgeries in the city of Tijuana, Mexico in 1993. Since 1993 he has performed more than 10,000 laparoscopic procedures and more than 3,000 of these are bariatric surgeries.  He started with the traditional open gastric bypass in 1993, and the laparoscopic gastric band in 1996. He has also performed the laparoscopic gastric bypass and duodenal switch since 2009. "After performing these kinds of surgeries, I realized that I must offer my patients a less invasive surgery for the treatment of morbid obesity.  I decided to offer the Gastric Sleeve or Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG) procedure with its very low risks of complications while providing patients similar weight loss results in the long term compared with other weight loss surgery options."
