The Surgical Weight Loss Institute of Kansas City Bariatric Center
I read a little about him and they said that he didn't have a good bedside manner, but that really didn't matter to me. When I met him in person, I thought that he was really personable. He said that he used to read the comments made about him on the internet and he had to stop because it would determine his mood for the day. If the comment was good, he would be on a natural high. If the comments were bad, he would hang his head low. I liked him. He talked to everyone individually to see if he thought we were good candidates for the surgery we wanted and he explained all of the risks to us thoroughly. I did not like the fact that, during my stay in the hospital, I did not see him once. I saw another doctor briefly who asked me if I was ready to be discharged and then he left me in the hospital with orders not to discharge me and he did not give me an explanation. That doctor left that task to the nurses. 24 hours later, I was still in the hospital with no other bariatric patients left, except me, still without word from any doctor. I called the exchange and Dr. James Scott called me back. I asked him why was I not being discharged. He told me that he would call Dr. De La Torre and have him call me back. 30 minutes later, I was discharged from the hospital. That was the thing that I hated most about my entire process. Dr. De La Torre later explained to me that he was out of town that next day which is why I didn't see him. He travels quite a bit, however he is a good surgeon.
I met Dr. Scott at my consult today. I was very impressed. He was very nice and was also eager to answer any questions that I had. He has a wonderful personality and that really helped me to relax. His entire office was fantastic through out my process so far. After attending Dr. DeLaTores seminar and meeting with Dr. Scott I am 110% sure I have made the correct choice in choosing my surgeons!
I was very impressed with Dr. Scott from the beginning and had complete faith that he knew what he was talking about. He is very matter of fact in describing the surgery and makes it clear that he is only giving the patient a weight loss tool - it is up to the patient to follow his well outlined program to be successful. I would highly recommend him to anyone considering the surgery. As well, his coordinator, Natalie, is outstanding. She is available for questions and having undergone the procedure herself, is fully aware of what is going on, etc....
My first impression was he seems to be very confident and I like that. Some say he is cocky, but i didnt find that at all. I loved him.
The office staff at Depaul is very helpful, super friendly and just wonderful to work with...nancy, kathy, and patsy and everyone there. Im confident they all know me by name.
Aftercare is a BIG deal at the DePaul Weight Loss Institute. Its honestly the key to making the surgery successful. Dr. De La Torre has done his part..now it up to us. The program is very structured. You know at all times what you should and should not be eating. You know what stages you are moving to next. I hightly recommend their center.
I think surgical competence and bedside manner are both equally as important and you know what...Dr. De La Torre has them both...especially the surgical competence. I know i was in good hands. Thanks Depaul
Dr. De La Torre is just fantastic! He has been so nice to me and I was so pleased to have him as his surgeon. His office staff is outstanding! I have never seen an office staff that is so friendly and sweet to everyone. They really worked with me and I could never say thank you enough. Anyone thinking of surgery really should consider this office. I am sure glad I did!
I spent 2 years researching the surgery before making the decision to do it. I found Dr. de la Torre on the internet and was very impressed with his credentials and history of involvement with the surgery. What I like the most about him and his staff is the total understanding they have that bariatric surgery is 10% surgery and 90% education and follow-up. You have total access to Nancy, his RN assistant, and if they don't know the answer to something, they will find it for you. They also research products and never recommend anything they haven't researched and/or tried for themselves. Dr. de la Torre works with a large team, so no matter what happens, you always have access to care. They are very open and forthright with the pros and cons of what you are doing and lets you know not only what is happening within his own service but also with the community at large. I highly recommend Dr. de la Torre and his team. They are great!
My first impression of him was that he was very knowledgable about bariatric surgery. I have kept the same impression thru my journey. I absolutely love his office people (especially Natalie). She is the nicest person. Dr. Scott highly recommends aftercare and he wants to see you 1 month post-op, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months. Then they have several support groups that he encourages you to attend. He is very explicit with the risks of the surgery. I think the world of Dr. Scott. He is very good at his profession and would recommend him to anyone.
My surgeons were Dr. Scott and Dr. De La Torre. My first impression of Dr Scott was very positive. I heard him speak at our meeting and found that he was very informative, along with having a great sense of humor. I liked him right away. I also like the fact he was very up front and didn't beat around the bush. I would of never made it thru the whole insurance experience without Natalie. I can not brag on her enough. She is an incrediable and beautiful human being. She has been thru the ups and downs and I respect her advice and experiencs. I only saw Dr. De La Torre the day after, while I was still in the hospital. He seemed very nice and had a pleasant bedside manner. I continue to see Dr. Scott for follow-up. He is very up front about his likes and dislikes. I appreciate his honesty. He is able to answer any and all questions I have had. I would recommend these Doctors to anyone looking for excellant health care and experience. They truely have changed my life. The risk was worth the results. My only disappointment is that aftercare programs/support groups are not available closer. I am greatful to them everyday!!
Dr Scott has been very informative with every step of the procedure. He has a great bed side manner. He answered all the questions I had, though I didn't have alot because they were answered during the conferences.I' d rate Dr Scott up there with a 10 plus. His staff is great with helping with the whole procedure.
MY FIRST IMPRESSION OF DR. SCOTT WAS: NOW I AM REALLY GONNA LIKE HIM CAUSE I CAN SEE HE TELLS IT LIKE IT IS AND DOESNT BEAT AROUND THE BUSH. I ALSO FELT LIKE WOW I KNOW HE IS GONNA SEE TO IT THAT I AM IN GOOD ENOUGHT HEALTH TO MAKE IT THROUGH THIS SURGERY BECAUSE OF ALL THE TEST HE ORDERED AND HE DIDNT ACT LIKE HE WAS IN SUCH A RUSH TO JUST LEAVE AND NOT ANSWER EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOUR QUESTIONS. I WOULD RECOMMEND HIM TO EVERYONE THAT IS LOOKING FOR A GREAT DOCTOR. THE OFFICE STAFF ARE ALL VERY NICE AND HELPFUL. I ESPECIALLY LIKE KASSIE AND NATALIE. KASSIE IS A HOOT TO TALK TO ONCE YOU GET TO KNOW HER. I REALLY CAN'T SAY THAT THERE IS ANYTHING THAT I DON'T LIKE ABOUT DR. SCOTT. HE GETS IN THERE AND LET'S YOU KNOW WHAT HE ESPECTS OUT OF YOU AND GOD FORBID ANYTHING SHOULD HAPPEN LIKE GAIN A FEW POUNDS HE DOESN'T YELL AT YA ABOUT IT HE IS REAL CALM AND JUST LETS YA KNOW YOU NEED TO TRY A LITTLE HARDER. I HAVE NOT HAD MY SURGERY YET IT IS SCHEDULED FOR SEPT. 12TH BUT HE HAS TOLD ME ABOUT THE AFTER CARE AND YES I AM SURE HE HAS A GREAT AFTERCARE PROGRAM. HE HAS EXPLAINED ALL THE RISK. I WOULD RATE HIM OVERALL A +10 I BELIEVE SUGICAL COMPETENCE AND BEDSIDE MANNER ARE BOTH GREAT.
