I have not personally met him yet, but will very soon! I can't wait. Everyone says what a wonderful and skilled suregeon he is. He has excellent qualifications, excellent history of bariatric surgery from way back in the 70s. He has perfected the DS. He does open on 90mins or less and will do lap suregy on a bmi of 70 or less! Can't wait till I leave for spain on 11/28/2005!!
My PCP (Marnie Foley - very cool chick) initially referred me to Emma Patterson at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland, Oregon.
My experiences with Dr. Patterson were less than positive. I have come away with a great distrust of her, and am thankful my insurance ended up NOT covering surgery. I did end up following up with Walter Lindstrom regarding my insurance - however, learned that our coverage (ODS Health Plans of Oregon) simply have an air-tight exclusion. My husband's employer also refused to eliminate the clause that excludes treatment of M.O. from their insurance product.
So, I end up a self-pay. I've done much research, and am confident that the BPD/DS and Dr. Baltasar in Spain are the right choices for me. So, what it all comes down to is the money - I'm saving my pennies, and praying for the surgery to come soon - before my health gives out.
8/10/2002: 5 weeks and 4 days ago I had my surgery with Dr. Baltasar. My first impression of him was that our meeting was something akin to running into someone you've loved and admired your whole life, but only knew from afar - yet on first meeting, I was genuinely welcomed, and made to feel as if the feeling were mutual. My impressions of Dr. Baltasar did change over time - but all only for the better. Not that I can think of a single negative thing. It's just that I grew to love and respect him more with each passing day - as I still continue to do.
I am so thankful for the opportunity to go to Spain and feel so fortunate to have Dr. Baltasar as my surgeon - and new friend. My surgery couldn't have gone smoother, and my recovery has been phenomenal. Dr. B is simply the best.

My first impression was that he truly cares about his patients. I found that to be true during the course of the surgery and aftercare.
His nurses are sweet and they try to do their best for you.
I would recommend Dr. Baltasar to anyone, but especially to the super morbid obese.
He has what it takes to pull us through the surgery with little complications.
Dr. Baltasar is a wonderful man and surgeon soft spoken kind gentle pleasant and friendly.Also very to the point matter of fact. My first impression was that he knows what he's doing and he likes what he does ALOT. I still have the same impression of him. The nurses and other staff in the clinic are very kind and sweet they do their job well.I did not meet "office staff". There is absolutely nothing I dislike about Dr. Baltasar or the clinic in Spain. It's a little antiquated but clean and that's what counts and the OR suite is modern and well equipped.You leave the clinic with typed detailed instructions for aftercare and you must have a primary doctor here in the USA that's willing to follow your aftercare.You also get his home phone &cell phone numbers and email addresses before you leave the clinic and he answers all calls and emails personally. The risks were explained to me by Dr. Baltasar and I was given a written consent outlining possible risks which I had to sign prior to surgery.Dr. Baltasar gets a 10 out of 10 from me for both surgical competence and bedside manner.
Dr. Baltasar is a great surgeon. He is so attentive to your needs and very caring. He is totally dedicated to his job. I couldn't say enough good about him. I would do it all over again!!!
One of the nicest people you will ever know! He answered all my emails, even gave me his personal phone numbers if I wanted to call him. At the hospital, he visited me 3 times a day and not only came in to check on me, but actually sat down and really visited! He listens to your concerns and answers them. I felt like he gave me excellent care along with the staff.
