Richard Perugini, M.D. Bariatrics Bariatric Center
Dr. Perugini is very professional and kind. When starting the journey, he takes the time to make sure you understand what is coming up, and what you will go through each step of the way. He also gave me very real expectations of future weight loss, and was supportive and encouraging each step of the way. Without Dr. Perugini as part of my team, I don't think I would have been as successful as I have been. Your team is a very important part of this journey and with him on board my team was A+ all the way!
At first he may seem a bit stiff if you don't know him, but he actually has a great manner and a good sense of humor. He places the priority on getting you every bit of information you may need at the time of your visit, leaving time for questions. A lot of doctors may be in the habit of socializing quite a bit with patients which is nice but often this can get you off track and you go home realizing you forgot to ask something important. With Dr. Perugini focusing so much on your concerns and the procedures ahead, steps before and after you really feel confident that all bases are covered. Its nice to feel safe when going into surgery as it can be so intimidating. Dr. Perugini is professionalism at its best, he gets the job done and he is there for you any time its needed. I had to reschedule my first surgery due to a cold, and he was super supportive and encouraging that we would get the job done. One month later I was happily, and safely sleeved.
God bless all those going forward with surgery, I hope you are fortunate enough to be in the skilled hands of Dr. Perugini!!
The first time I met him, I thought he was knowledgeable but no sense of humor. The sense of humor has increased in the few times I've seen him since then. I think Dr. Perugini is awesome and would recommend him to anyone else! He went over all of the risks beforehand and even drew pictures for me so I would have a better understanding. He never makes me feel like I'm asking a dumb question and goes in detail when answering my questions.
First Impression?.....Young but very competant. I have seen him a number of times do some issues I have had, My Surgeon is pretty patient and Very Informative. I'm not Quite sure about his bedside manner though. He's just so to the point....no extra chit chat or anything.. That's ok with me, I'd be a bit concerned if it was the other way around! I feel safe being in his care. This journey has been pretty frustrating but Dr. Perugini is so informative and like I said, patient, I think he's a good fit. The only negative thing i can think of is his lack of humor... Ah, what am I saying..... as long as he knows what he's doing... what does it matter!

The UMASS program has a wonderful after surgery support program which was the most important thing to me.rnThe presurgical information was exactly what I needed. Honest, no false promises, and focused on what the patient puts in, is what the patient gets out. There is no miracle cure.rnDr. Kelly has phenominal bedside manner, so it is difficult for the other doctors in the program to compare. I've had professional, curteous and thorough care from Dr. Perugini.

I finally decided upon Lap Band. I meet my surgeon once for initial surgery consult in regards to what I wanted. When I went back in for my pre-op testing the NP saw me. I had the surgery on June 19, 2007. I saw my surgeon for a couple of minutes prior to surgery but nothing after. I heard he followed up but didn't see him in recovery room. Maybe that is ony with gastric bypass patients - not sure - but disappointed he didn't come in to verbally check in on me. My next appointment is post surgery @ 2 weeks. I hope I see him then. My personal opinion is still up in the air.
First saw Dr. Perugini on September 27, 2006. Spoke with his intern first, who spent about 1/2 hour with me giving me all the info about the surgery, including everything that could possibly go wrong (Yikes!) and answering any questions I had. Don't remember his name - nice, informed, I was comfortable with him. Dr. Perugini came in next and spent about 2 minutes with me. Got good vibes and all, but I would have liked for him to seem as though he was a bit more interested in me as an individual. Kind of felt like he was speeding through just to get on to more important matters. It's OK though, what's key is that he's got a reputation at the weight clinic as an incredible surgeon, and that's what is most important to me. Kind of.rnrnSaw Dr. Perugini again on November 8 after my day of pre-op testing. He spent a bit more time with me (emphasis on A BIT), really, same impression as before.rnrnThe large and diverse staff is incredible - friendly, helpful, right there for you with answers to any questions, solutions to any problems. Very positive and encouraging.rnrnFYI - I know 3 people who have had Dr. Perugini as their surgeon and all would choose him again.rnrnUPDATE - Called Dr. Perugini with a question about my gall bladder (3 days before surgery). He returned my call within 1/2 hour and spent 10 minutes on the phone with me - Definitely a plus in Dr. Perugini's rating, in my opinion.
