Mount Sinai Hospital Bariatric Center
My first impression of Dr. Herron is that he is nicer looking in person than on his website-www.surgicallyslim.com!! I know I'm bad. Anyway, I met him yesterday, Oct. 5 for the first time. I have corresponded with him through email a few time with questions. He is very good and quick about answers through email. I have to decide between either bpd/ds or regular gastric bypass. When I went in there I was pretty set on duodenal switch. He gave me more pros and cons for each to make me have a more informed decision. His office staff is good, yes they are very busy but they seem to be nice. His assistant, Yvette is very nice. I liked her a lot. I scheduled my surgery for December 13-lap RNY.
My first impression of Dr. Herron's office was that it was a little nutsy there. HOWEVER, the entire stafff, particularly Yvette, were helpfull and caring. My appointment was delayied and IJJ was kept informed of when it would be. I liked Dr. Herron very much. He has fabulous credentials. One thing though, you need to be very pro-active and follow through with everything - they are too busy to check up on you. I made all my appointments but will check fairly regulary to see that my test results and other pre-op reports make it to them. He seemed very confident that insurance would cover everything.
11/5/00 I am 4 days post op and have nothing but kudos for Dr. Herron. He was wonderful to me both during pr-op and post op. I also want to say that the whole staff has been wonderful - while you may end up waiting a long time for your appointment, I must also say that they followed up on all my questions, are available now sshould I havae any questions.
Dr. Herron is absolutely wonderful! I have never liked doctors...and since the moment I met him, I had complete faith and trust in him. He has a wonderful personality & bedside manner. I never felt self-conscious or uncomfortable with him. When I went for my first official appointment with him, I took a list of about 50 questions (you can find a list of things to ask when choosing a doctor at http://www.ossg-nyc-metro.org/...I strongly recommend it) and he answered them all very thoroughly, and I even felt comfortable enougth to ask some very private questions, which he didnt bat an eye at. As for the staff, they are great too. Especially Yvette...she has helped me make sense of all the steps and how to get them done with the least amount of headache. She and Yvonne are both dolls. :)
Only negative thing was the wait...if you have a 9:00 appt dont expect to be seen before 10. And poor magazine selection! If anyone goes to Dr. Herron, and has some magazines you could donate, please do. Im going to take some in too. :)
I MET WITH.DR. DANIEL HERRON TODAY
10/19/00.AFTER WEEKS OF RESEARCH I CHOSE HIM BECAUSE OF THE POSITVE AND GLOWING COMMENTS FROM PEOPLE ON THIS SIGHT AND BECAUSE HE PERFORMED THE TYPE OF SURGERY (MINIMALLY INVASIVE)THAT I WANTED TO HAVE. THE FACT THAT HE WAS AT MT. SINAI HOSPITAL HERE IN MANHATTAN WAS PERFECT. DR. HERRON WAS THE IDEAL HEALTH CARE PROVIDER.HE EXTENDED HIS HAND AND WELCOMED MY DAUGHTER AND ME.HE WAS RELAXED,CONFIDENT AND REASSURING.EVEN THOUGH I KNOW HE HAD GIVEN THIS SAME PRESENTATION PROBABLY A HUNDRED TIMES ,HE WAS IN THHE MOMENT WITH ME.HE EXPLAINED EVERY DETAIL
AND DREW DIAGRAMS.HE ASKED SEVERAL TIMES
IF I HAD MORE QUESTIONS.HE TOLD ME THAT MY BMI WAS 69.1(I WAS 380LBS.). HE WANTED
ME TO LOOSE 10-15 LBS. TO BE ON THE SAFER
SIDE FOR THE MIMI BY PASS PROCEDURE. HE ASSUERED THAT IF ANYTHING WENT WRONG DURING THE SURGERY THAT HE WOULD CONTINUE ON USING THE OPEN PROCEDUERE AND MAKE A SMALL AS INCISION AS POSSIBLE.WHEN HE EXAMINED ME
HE WAS EFFICIENT,GENTLE AND SUPPORTIVE.
HE WENT OVER IN DETAIL WHAT THE NEXT STEPS WERE CONCERNING THE INSURANCE ETC.
MY DATE IS 12/1/00. SOONER IF ALL THE WORK IS COMPLETE.HIS NURSE YVONNE WAS VERY BUSINESS LIKE AND GAVE ME INSTRUCTIONS HOW TO PROCEED.
I NEEDED BLOOD WORK,A LETTER FROM MY THERAPIST AND MY OWN DOCTOR. I ALSO NEEDED
TO SEE A NUTRIONIST AND HAVE A GASTRONOMY
PROCEDURE DONE TO SEE IF I HAD STOMACH ULCERS OR INFECTIONS. EVERYTHING COULD BE BE DONE AT MT. SINAI. AFTER READING THIS YOU MUST KNOW THAT I AM VERY IMPRESSED WITH DR. HERRON AND I FEEL CONFIDENT IAM IN GOOD HANDS. OH ,I FORGOT TO MENTION THAT HE WENT OVER IN DETAIL THE RISKS AND AFTERCARE PLAN.
HIS OFFICE STAFF WAS BUSY BUT PROFESSIONAL.
MY WAITING TIME WAS SHORT (MAYBE 15MIN.)
AND I NEEDED THAT TIME TO COMPLETE MY FORMS AND SURVEY.IN ANSWERING THIS SURVEY THEY SAID TO BALANCE MY REVIEW,BUT IN ALL HONESTY
I HAVE NOTHING NEGATIVE TO REPORT......
I WILL SAY THOUGH THAT THIS IS MY OWN EXPERIENCE AND I'M HAPPY THAT IT WAS SO VERY POSITIVE FOR ME.
I liked Dr. Herron a lot, right from the first minute I met him.
He was very easy to talk to, answered all questions and explained everything in detail (with drawings, of course). This includes, of course, all the risks involved. In my case, he went thru the pros and cons of the Duodenal Switch surgery vs. RNY.
However, the way the office is run is a different story. They seem to lose papers a lot. Things have to be faxed multiple times - at least I had to. They are very nice to talk to over the phone (since I live out of state) and also respond to emails quickly.
Bottom line: Dr. Herron is an excellent surgeon who also posesses great bedside manners. Great combo!
My first impression of Dr. Herron was that he was warm, caring, and above all very knowledgeable. As I am writing this, I am 6 days out of surgery (Lap RNY) and doing fantastic. Dr. Herron's skill along with his great bedside manner make him a perfect 10. As for aftercare, I am only 6 days post -op but I feel very confident about the aftercare I will receive. Overall, he is a top notch surgeon who has superior surgical competence along with a great bedside manner. Who can ask for better than that?Feel free to e-mail me if anyone has any questions. It is my pleasure to help in any way I can.
Dr. Herron was very
helpful I had a phone
visit first and then
traveled to NYC for the
consult.I had a lap BPD/DS on July 10th 2000.
My impression of Dr.Herron has not changed he takes the time to answer questions .
His office is VERY busy but by keep calling back or the use of email you can contact people.
Sometimes people are very hard to get a hold of.
He does emphasis after care especially with their nutritionist, Nichole.
He explained all the risks of this surgery in great detail and has an information packet for patients.
HE IS THE TOPS IN MY BOOK !! I have been VERY happy
with my surgery.
I think surgical competence in a surgeon is best but it doesn't hurt to have bedside manners. too.
I've only met with Dr. Herron once. It was a very nice experience. Though I did my research, I didn't fully understand everything until he drew and explained his illustration. I feel confident in him. Also, whenever I have a question, I just email him and he replies quicky. Dr. Herron has a website, www.surgicallyslim.com. You can email him through that site.
Dr Daniel Herron, MD at Mount Sinai in Manhattan
I was very impressed with his sincerity and knowledge
He really knows his stuff. 8-)
The staff appears to be very nice. I dealt with
Yvette the medical assistant and Bernadette, his
nurse, both were very informative.
My only problem was with the size of the facility,
and the fact that they at times didn't seem aware
that I was coming from out of state, and couldn't come
for an appointment on another day.
I really coundn't find anything wrong with Dr Herron
on this visit.....
I had trouble getting my letter from the Dr's office to
my insurance company..took a few calls from me but than
all was okay.
I have met twice with my surgeon, Dr. Daniel Herron, and he seems very kind, patient and low-key. He was very willing to take time to answer my questions and those of my husband, who was with me.
His nurse/coordinator, Bernadette, is a sweetie and very helpful. They handled all the insurance contacts, and I was approved after one letter.
The only negative element so far has been that some of the administrative staff (NOT the medical staff) tends to be abrupt, both on the phone and when you show up for an appointment, almost to the point of rudeness. Also, waiting times tend to be long.
