John Kelly, M.D. Bariatrics Bariatric Center
I have only seen him at my first support group meeting. I need to attend 2 of these monthly meetings before I can even start the process. From what I saw at the meeting he seems to know what he's doing. He has performed 110 Laproscopicly, 2 open and 1 death(this info I recieved on 6/13/01). I would say that is a pretty good success rate. As I get to know him more, I will update.
1/17/02: I have found Dr. Kelly to be a very skilled surgeon. He is very kind & considerate. He has a true passion for his work and true compassion for his patients. God gave him to us as a second chance in life. he's a true angel.
The first time I saw Dr. Kelly, I had to wonder what prompted him to get into this field of surgery, he is a very slender man and not very tall. But after listening to him speak, I realized he cared about all of the people in the room. And I know one of him patients and she could not say enough great things about him. And as I continued my journey I knew she was right. He before surgery requirements consist of 2 support group meetings, 2 behavioral evaluation and 1 meeting with a nutritionist. Then you meet with him. So that by then you have lots of information and any question you may still have he and his staff take the time to answer.
His staff did all the insurance paperwork. I just had to wait for an answer.
After my surgery on 11/26/01 I saw him each day until I went home and any time I have called his office, someone has called back quickly.
His aftercare program is as intense as his before surgery. You see him two weeks after surgery and the nutritionist 3 weeks. And continue to have follow-ups with him for quite some time.
My first impression of Dr Kelly was that he seemed to be a MAN of high integrity, kindness and dedication, I wondered of it was an act. I spent a few moments with him after a meeting and was convinced of my first impressions. I have every confidence in his ability to help me through this time in my life. Dr Kelly's staff have all been wonderful, I'm in the middle of a tough time in my life and Dr Kelly's TEAM have been the bright spot.
Dr. John Kelly seems to be a very nice and intelligent man. He is on my side and I have been told by other people he will fight for me to have this surgery done. I like him. I have finally sat down with him one on one. I asked him all the questions I wanted he is a very patient and caring man, he is also very very honest. Im just waiting for insurance approval, which his office is doing. Its been almost three weeks....and I havent heard anything yet......im being patient! LOL
So far my impression of Dr. Kelly is all that I heard of him to be. He seems so caring and understanding and was willing to take extra time out to answer any questions. Actuaaly he likes for you to ask questions because he wants you to be very well informed about what will happen and what can happen. I am so glad that he is so caring as he is smart and skilled. I trust him fully.
Dr. Kelly is an excellent man as well as a surgeon.
No my impression of him has never changed.
His office staff is very friendly, but sometimes too busy to give the attention you might be looking for.
I like everything about Dr. Kelly.
Dr. Kelly is great..I have confidence in him so what else do you need! So far the staff has been wonderful. They have NEVER made me feel like a fat person. So far nothing..I didn't like waiting for two support meeting before I could call him but I do understand why.
They have a great aftercare and support..I truly felt I could call any of them and ask questions. Also if you email Dr. Kelly he answers quite quickly which surprised me.Surgical competence is of course the most important thing ...I have heard such good things and have seen his patients so he seems to be pretty good...I will have to let you know how his bedside manner is after the 26th!I can't give him a rating yet on everything but so far he is a 8 1/2
Feel free to email me and ask anything you want. Aug 17th well now his bedside manner is very caring which is nice....he is a wonderful doctor..so go to him with out any worries!
I am scheduled for a adjustable lap band in Oct., 2001. Dr. John Kelly of UMass, Worc. is the surgeon. I am pleased and excited to be one of the first to have this procedure done after FDA approval. I have researched bariatric surgery for three years and waited for this procedure to clear FDA. In my opinion I believe the adjustable lap band is the safest, least intrusive and reversable bariatric surgery. Everything about the lap band seems to be the clear and best option for me.
If there is anyone out there who is considering the lap band please contact me.
I have been researching bariatric surgery for three years, and had, at first, settled on a procedure know as the mini-gastric bypass. This procedure is perfomed by a surgeon in North Carolina by the name of Dr. Robert Rutledge. I had started to get my information together for this procedure when I first heard about the adjustable lap-band. This was approx. 1.5 years ago. At about the same time my husband who works in health care gave me the name of Dr. Kelly having been referred to as the top Doc. for this surgery. I began looking into his procedure and I must say I was not thrilled with the Roux-en-Y procedure. I went to my first support meeting and wondered where Dr. Kelly was, I saw the behavioral specialist, the guest speaker and this little man who darted across the stage and up to the podium.
My god, this was Dr. Kelly, as soon as he began speaking I felt reassured, this man knew what he was talking about. I asked about the lap-band and what he thought of it. His response made me decide he was the guy for me. He said he thinks it is a great device although at that time(Nov. 2000) it was not available in the U.S.
I continued with meetings and saw the rest of the team, I even got into the support group with Dr. Marjorie Kaplan. I will say the gruop was wonderful, great insights and wonderful coping tools.
By the time I was to meet Dr. Kelly at his office we were pretty sure the lap band would be approved shortly. Met with Dr. Kelly, he is more charming one on one then in the large groups and once again he assured me that he thinks the lap band a great tool. The following week the adjustable lap- band was approved for the U.S. market.
Gloria put my paperwork in to insurance(BC/BS of Massachusetts) and within two weeks I was approved. I will go in in the middle to end of Oct. Because Dr. Kelly was chosen to participate in the first year of the lap band procedure he must, by FDA standards have another surgeon who has experience with the surgery on hand. I believe this is a great breakthrough in bariatric surgery(world-wide this procedure has been done since 1983)and look forward to posting my results.
I would also like to mention my GREAT primary care phsician, Dr. James Tierney. I adore him!!! He, and his team have always been my biggest support, much thanks to him.
my first impression of Dr.Kelly was that he didn't look old enough to be a doctor....I found him to be very honest and understanding.....he told me all the good things about the surgery and the things that could happen or go wrong....I have all the faith in him....he seem to be a very understanding man.....he talked to me in the language that I understand...aftercare is so very important....on a scale of 1-1o, he would be a definite 10,no doubt it.!!!!!
he is an incredibly professional man. he speaks with the patients in a down to earth tone, not so patronizing or paternalistic as some doctors can be. he also joins in most of the support group meetings to explain the proceedure and answer questions.
his staff and the rest of the bariatric surgery team are also very helpful. there is a rather long process however to being admitted into the program. it takes anywhere from 4 to 6 months to go through the entire screening process. this is done so that you will have the best chances of having a successful surgery. it also gives you time to think and be SURE that surgery is a good option for you, and to contemplate exactly for who and why you are doing it.
there is councelling before and afterwards; nutritional support; and the support group of patients both for pre- and post-op.ther are post-op exams to check on the progress of the healing and to look for any potential problems. overall it is the most well thought out program i have seen thus far.
