I felt Dr Swain was a very good surgeon from the moment that I met with him. He listened to my worries/concerns/questions and was able to answer all if not most of them. Over time I saw him less and less and eventually was seen by a different surgeon for follow up care. Dr Swain absolutely emphasized aftercare. I meet twice a month at Health east (since it is closer for me) for Pre and Post Bariatric meetings which he was very glad to hear. Both his bedside manner and his surgical competence was great. He does do the surgery a little different as he basis it off your height, which I found out after surgery. Overall I give him a B+ a-. I did have some medical concerns that I did not have prior to surgery but eventually his staff was able to work through that with me, thanks Jenny, and although I still have some of the same problems they are still there for me and it has been 2 years since surgery. The staff at Mayo Clinic is very good. Shortly I will be having my 2 year follow up.

My first impression of Dr. Swain was: Oh my gosh he is young. He was wonderful, really knows what he is doing and does it very well. The office staff is very helpful and wonderful to answer any and all questions.
He is really easy to talk with and will explain anything you do not understand. Aftercare is very important with Dr. Swain, you have follow up with him every 3 months and with your PCP every month. Aftercare is pretty much layed out for us. You have the blood work ups the dietian and him. Yes Dr. Swain did address the risk of the surgery, but the risk are always there in any type of surgery. I would rate Dr. Swain at 100 % and would recommend him to everyone. He is great in all areas of his work.

Dr. James Swain is a top-notch surgeon at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN (formally at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, AZ). His surgical expertise and bedside manner both get an A+. He is a wonderful listener and took all my concerns seriously. My first impression of him was that he was someone that I might be friends with if we were in different circumstances. It was obvious from our first appointment that he was extremely intelligent and cared tremendously about the long-term success of his patients. He works with a NP named Jennifer Frank who is also wonderful. They are professional in every way and they made me feel like I was their top priority during every appointment. The Aftercare Program is all-inclusive and I feel like I have a support system that will be supporting me for years to come! It doesn't get better than that!

My first impression of Dr.Swain was \"what a nice man\". At 262 pounds, he didn't consider me really \"overweight\". He deals with 700-800 pound people, but I told him I am considered Obese and just shutter at that word, and he totally understood. rnThe entire staff at the Mayo Clinic was wonderful. He has performed over 700 bariatric surgeries. I would rate him at a \"10\" for politeness, knowledge and kindness. These comments are based on my one and only meeting with him so far.

My first impression was that Dr Swain seemed quite young, but I quickly came to trust that he is very skilled and knowledgable when it comes to bariatrics and surgery in general. He has an easy, respectful manner and is open to questions and concerns. Dr Swain did not perform my original surgeon, I came to him after several unnecessary complications led me to lose confidence in my first medical team. Dr Swain and Judy (his RN) have been incredibly supportive, informative and collaborative in the treatment of my recurrent complications and I feel very confident in their care. The aftercare program at Mayo doesn't seem as cohesive/intensive as my first program, but Dr Swain, and especially nurse Judy, provide more than enough support and guidance- and I do have access to dietitians, etc.. as needed.

Upon first meeting with Dr. Swain I felt at peace and very comfortable. He is kind and warm in addition to being exceedingly intelligent and talented as a surgeon. He doesn't sugar coat gastric bypass. He is real and straight forward about his expectations for your results and he stresses the importance of being educated about the procedure and using it as a tool rather than a magic pill which is the right way. He had absolutely changed my life for the positive. I actually had a difficult time deciding if gastric bypass was for me. Dr. Swain never pressured me to have the surgery, rather he even supported me in my decision to postpone the surgery till I was ready. Once I was, we went on full steam ahead. However, I did encounter some problems! I was still hungry after surgery, go figure? I had a very difficult time losing weight at first. It actually took about 6-8 months for me to learn how to use my new stomach as a tool and that it could not do all the work by itself! Dr. Swain was there for me to encourage me and even reprimand me to some extent. I needed to hear that I wasn't doing what I was supposed to. Now 2 1/2 years later I am actually very successful. I have maintained my weight loss and have proven that slow and steady does win the race. I love Dr. Swain, he has been a blessing in my life in more ways than I can even express!

My first impression was that I really liked him and he was caring and interested in "me” as a person. When I went for my check ups he has been caring and helpful answering all my questions. His office staff was the best. There has been nothing I haven't liked about him or his staff. Dr.Swain if very much into aftercare by himself and his nurse and dietician. I was high risk and had many questions and tests done. He was informative and understood my concerns. His surgical competence is what made me go to him in the first place he was highly recommended by my cardiologist and PCP. He has a very good bedside manner. I don't have anything negative to say about my experience all went well and I was not expecting it to be as easy as it came to be. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Dr. Swain is hands down the most skilled and compassionate surgeon I can imagine. He is part of a very comprehensive bariatric program at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale. In addition, he does GBS laproscopically as often as possible, which is easier on the patient. Aftercare is very important and we have a very active support group twice a month (one for preops and one for postops) and a specific schedule of post operative visits especially in the first year. Mayo has embraced this area with an excellent approval process, and aftercare program. Anyone who is able to access Mayo for their GBS is lucky. Dr. Swain is not only a genuinely nice man, he is compassionate to the needs of the obese patient, as is his office staff. The one frustration I had in the approval process is that some of the steps were unclear, and I would lose time trying to figure out who/what I needed to do next. I know that Mayo is honing the program all the time. Also, I was very dissatisfied with the psychiatrist we were made to see preop. She was mean and uncaring and many patients have expressed concern about her attitude. As far as I know, she is still a part of the approval process. Obese patients don't need more "shaming" in their lives at this point and that is what this woman does. This is not a good impression for Mayo in my opinion.
