J. Kenneth Reed, M.D. Bariatrics Bariatric Center
Dr. Reed is a very nice man. Caring and understanding. He has a 5 year aftercare program, which is excellent. He has a dietician right in his office. His secretary, Denise, is the most pleasant person and very sympathetic.
Dr. Reed was very down to earth and staright forward about the RNY, he did not sugar coat things, but also, he was not mean or degrading. He made sure I was completely aware of all the risks involved.
I have now had my Gastroscophy with him and he was very gentle and kind.
January 2002:
My first impression of Dr. Reed is that he is nice and easy to talk to. He didn't make me feel guilty or embarassed of being obese, but made me feel comfortable. The appointment wasn't rushed - he spent about 30 minutes with me, even though it was 5:00 pm and he had a waiting room full of patients. His secretary Denise was very kind, helpful, and had a good sense of humour. Dr. Reed told me of the risks and possible complications without dwelling on them, and also explained the chances of success I would have, depending on my involvement and committment to stick to his program after surgery. He told me that he only does the surgery once, and that patients who continue to overeat and eventually gain back most of their weight (about 33%) do not get another surgery, and cautioned me to be very serious about this decision. He said that keeping appointments after surgery (he follows his patients for about 3 years) is very important in patient success. He encourages patients to find their own support group, but was willing to give me name of other patients when I asked. Overall, I would rate him an 8. He didn't laugh much at my attempts at humour, but he looked tired, and maybe thought that I wasn't being serious enough. (I sometimes make jokes to cover up my nervousness.) I am glad I chose him for a surgeon.
December 2002:
I am so happy I chose Dr. Reed as a surgeon - he is very meticulous, careful, and has an excellent reputation for having patients with very few post-op complications. When I was in the hospital after surgery, several nurses told me that Dr. Reed was the best surgeon in the hospital, and that I was lucky to have him. He came to see me every day in the hospital, even Saturday and Sunday. He has been great at follow-up after surgery: I've had 4 or 5 appointments with him already since surgery, and each time I also see his nutritionist Nancy, who helps keep me on track with my food plan. Dr. Reed truly cares about his patients and wants to see them succeed. I'm very blessed to have had him for a surgeon.
