I was very impressed with Dr. Afram and his staff.

avatar

My impression of Dr Afram is that he appears to be very confident and very capable, since hes done well over 1000 surgeries over the last 20 yrs.

His office staff appear to be excited about thier work, having both had WLS in the past.

I contacted Dr Afram during the second week of August 1999. I was promptly offered an opportunity to meet with him and upon beginning my consultation was VERY pleased with his personality, professionalism and demeanor. Dr. Afram was is very thorough with his explanations of the RNY Gastric Bypass procedure and was more than willing to take as much time as I needed to answer any and ALL of my inquiries about what to expect and to assuage my fears. He explained the risks as well as the benefits of the procedure and was frank but kind with the expectations of me after surgery should I choose to proceed. I was impressed by the package that Dr Afram offers which includes Psychologist and Nutritionist facilitated Pre/Post Surgical Group Therapy Sessions, A Certified Dietician/Nutritionist on staff to answer and assist with any questions or issues a patient may have regarding food or eating, and equally important - an open door attitude with Dr Afram himself, that any question that has arisen, he has been very attentive and kind about answering.

If anything my initial impression of Dr Afram has been cemented over time. I would recommend him to anyone considering Obesity surgery. The surgery went flawlessly and every detail was observed. Dr. Afram is a meticulous and perfectionistic surgeon and the result was a smooth relatively uneventful surgery and recovery.

Dr Afram's staff is also very impressive. His focus is heavily structured toward aftercare, including regular scheduled follow up visits with the surgeon, testing, support group meetings and continued support from vital staff members. Group sessions are offered weekly on Wednesdays at noon, and biweekly on Thursdays at 6:15. Patients are STRONGLY encouraged to attend these meetings as they increase the success of the surgical experience. Dr. Afram has several post surgical patients on staff which also helps patients considering surgery feel more comfortable with their decision. Fran, a surgical patient of Dr Aframs, works part time in the office and is a wonderful, friendly, kind and supportive person that is always available to answer questions and to make the process of having "Major Surgery" seem less stressful. Velma, the insurance processor, was amazing - she is excellent at navigating the maze of presurgical requirements and red tape to get you to the final point of approval and scheduled for surgery. Her patience and skill are superior and she is a huge asset to the program. Jennifer Dallabrida is the Nutritionist/Dietician on staff who has been a wealth of information both pre and post surgically as I have navigated my way through liquids purees soft foods and the remainder of the food jungle that awaits us as post surgical patients. She is in the office daily and never more than a phone call or email away. Anyone dealing with food after surgery can tell you how important that is. Maria Cohn, the Psychologist is also wonderful, she facilitates our group meetings along with Jennifer weekly ( there is also a biweekly evening meeting ) to be sure that our emotional needs are being addressed as we begin to lose weight and feel differently about ourselves and our environments. Her guidance and information help us all find a healthier way of emotionally dealing with what is a very stressful but positive life changing experience. The total package is present, surgery, support and nutrition, making this a superior choice for anyone serious about maintaining healthy weight loss after surgery. My only negatives were an infiltrated IV (not Dr Aframs fault) and a couple of less than attentive nurses in the hospital, however I addressed this with Dr Afram's staff and they made certain the issue was addressed and resolved on the floor in the hospital.

Over all I have NO complaints whatsoever about Dr Afram or his program. He has wonderful bedside manner, complimented by his meticulous attention to detail and caring attitude. I only wish he were a bit closer to me geographically so I could participate more in assisting patients with their quest to gain information about surgery. ( Maybe I ought to move...:) ) I recommend anyone on the East coast that is comfortable coming to Washington DC to see Dr Afram and form your own opinions. If you choose him as your surgeon, you will be glad you did!

Dr. Afram is an extremely good surgeon. He is very knowledgable of obesity and the co-morbid conditions one can have due to this disease. My first impression of him was that he had more personality that most surgeons, which surprised me. He took the time to listen and he explained everything to me until I understood.
His staff are equally great. You have a whole support system there for you. An aftercare program that is very dedicated to helping you understand this new tool that Dr. Afram has given you, and realized that it is not perfection.
I have never heard any negative comments made about Dr. Afram. He is a wonderful surgeon who really shows that he cares for each patient. To be honest, I don't have any negative comments about him. Maybe he could have made my scar a little smaller, but I think that goes with the territory of having surgery.

I was very much impressed with Dr. Afram and his office staff. Everyone was friendly, caring, knowledgable and willing to spend time answering questions. Dr. Afram very much emphasizes aftercare with regular office visits and group meetings with the staff psychologist and nutritionist. Dr. Afram is a most caring physician and always returns phone calls in a timely manner. He and his staff are genuinely interested in your well being and are always available. I felt that I received superior care surgically and that excellent level of care continues through the structured aftercare program available. I think I would prefer surgical competence to good bedside manner but I never had to choose between the two; Dr. Afram has both. My experience to date has been very positive. These are my personal experiences which , of course, do not guarantee anyone else's future experiences.
