Bluegrass Bariatric Surgical Associates, LLC Bariatric Center
I had lapband surgery about 7 years ago. Unfortunately the band slipped and I ended up in the hospital and had to have it removed. Although Dr Oldham originally placed my band, he is working in Louisville now and Dr. Weiss remived it for me. Everyone I have spoken to including my future son-in-law that works at the hospital told me he was an excellent surgeon and meticulously handles each case with the same level if excellence. From what I saw I would have to agree. He is truly one if the best bariatric surgeons. I had no concerns knowing he was the one performing my surgery.
I will say however, that he lacks in the area of bedside manner, his communication style was blunt and critical to the point of being harsh. A couple of the nurses assured me it wasn't personal because he was often very difficult to
communicate with and the staff had to consciously overlook his harshness. I can' t fault what he was trying to communicate to me. However being firm does not require harshness and causing an already frightened patient to cry. And I do not believe that insisting on excellence requires him to treat the caring nursing staff with intimidation.
Dr Weiss is a great surgeon and has improved tge health and life if countless patients.

Dr. Weiss is absolutely fantastic. He is thorough, competent, professional, approachable and very caring. I originally went to him for RNY, however when I explained my family history, as well as my health history, he and Catherine encouraged me to pursue VSG. I was upset initially, but realized that Dr. Weiss did this out of concern for me as a human being. He would have made a lot more money doing the RNY, but my health was more important than financial gain. How many times can anyone say that about a surgeon?
He is passionate about his work, about his patients and about patients following the program to a 'T'. He emphasizes before surgery care, post-op care, and a complete lifestyle change. He scared the bejeezus out of me when talking about post-op care, vitamin regimen, eating schedule, smoking, drug interactions and what would happen if you didn't follow the guidelines. He meant to scare us all.
I think the only thing that I didn't like about my whole experience was going to my appointment in September, knowing I was approved for surgery in two weeks and being turned away. It would have been better knowing up front that he prefers VSG. I had to obtain new insurance and had my surgery in January. I know that VSG is better for me and I'm very glad we went this path (it's what I originally wanted when researching procedures). I appreciated his candor - I was just horribly disappointed and impatient.
Catherine is the best!! I believe he's restructured his Lexington office staff, which is great. The initial people I dealt with the first part of 2013 were not very professional, didn't seem to care about me or my goals. It's all good now!

I can't brag enough about dr Weiss I had VSG 11/23/11 and had a wonder experience Bluegrass Bariatrics and the Central Baptist weight loss center & hospital are outstanding.
He is a very down to earth person and explains things so non medical persons can understand. His personal thoughts on which surgery was right for me and why really sold me on his concern for his patients future success.

I would recommend Dr. Weiss very highly. I thought he was friendly and warm, but also professional. He stressed the importance of making the required changes to make the most of my new pouch, and he urges patients to understand that they are accountable for their own success. I had absolutely no problems and I believe this was due to the fact that he and his staff prepared me thoroughly and that he is a very capable surgeon.

I had the LapBand surgery December 27, 2010. Dr. G. Derek Weiss was my surgeon. He was absolutley awesome! I have nothing but good to say about the Bluegrass/Commonwealth Bariatric Team. Also the staff at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital were really great the morning of my surgery. The Bariatric Team are so informative and are there to help at anytime. They really stress the support group meetings and to call them with any questions. They don't just do the surgery and leave you hanging. This is a big help! It isn't time for me to go back to the doctor yet, but I am sure they will be as great as they have been. Lisa
