Alabama Weight Loss Surgery Bariatric Center
I met with Dr. Les Miles and his nurse Lisa Kuntz on January 31, 2003 for my initial consultation. The office staff was nice, but they were all incredibly busy. I only had to wait in the waiting room approximately 30 minutes or so. I was taken to an examination room and Lisa came in first and we discussed the surgery. She went over the procedure, the risks, the aftercare and what I should expect the results to be. After Lisa spoke with me, Dr. Miles came in. He was very friendly and answered all of my questions. I was scared because neither he nor Lisa downplayed the risks of this surgery. But he is an excellent surgeon and was very informative. Their program at Medical Center East is incredible and I would recommend it to anyone thinking of having the surgery.

my first impression of dr. miles was formed at the required seminar before you schedule your first office visit. both my husband and i attended the seminar and we found dr. miles to be a very friendly down to earth man. he was very knowledgeable and took his time answering AII questions presented to him. what impressed me was at the beginning of the seminar he told us "at the end of the seminar i will answer any questions you may have. i will stay until all questions are answered." he covered the risks of surgery, diet, exercise, ins, aftercare and much more. i think a surgeon should have excellent skill and bedside manner. we'll see how that goes as my journey progresses. first appt. is 4/17/03.
:)
Dr. Miles was so nice. He was willing to address any questions and fears I had. Even though after hanging out here for the past year, most questions I've had have been answered. His staff is great. I had always wanted him as my surgeon (He did my friend's RNY and my sister's gallbladder surgery), but we had changed insurance for a time last year when my Husband was re-activated with the Army and Dr. Miles wasn't listed as a preferred provider. Since then though, my husband is a civilian again and our Blue Cross is reinstated. So I went in expecting he and his staff would be nice and considerate. But the atmosphere was also calming, you know, not hectic or rushed even though it was the end of the day. I think I may have seemed too unafraid of the procedure, because his nurse practitioner pointed the dangers a couple of times. Things went fairly quickly (he makes you have all the medical history forms filled out BEFORE your appointment). All I have to do now is have my psych evaluation, my labs done, and get my endocrinologist to write a letter, then we can schedule my surgery. Sounds simple, huh? I'll be 40 this year and this is my present to ME!
Dr. Miles has a great personality in working with weight loss surgery patients. He tells you everything you need to hear. I had complications with my surgery and was glad that Dr. Miles had Dr. Schmidt working with him. He is also wonderful. The office staff is also exceptional. Especially Debra. She was outstanding. Because of the complications, I had a lot of contact in the beginning weeks after my surgery. Everyone was very nice!!!
Dr. Miles makes a very good first impression at the WLS seminar that he gives at Medical Center East. He is approachable and friendly. He will gladly answer general questions during the seminar and answer personal questions during the initial evaluation visit to his office.
His office staff is efficient and friendly. Each person that I have had dealings with has been knowledgeable in his/her area (insurance, approval procedure, referrals for other evaluations, etc). The people in his office made it as easy to understand the necessary steps as possible.
Dr. Miles emphasizes aftercare strongly. He requests regular followup visits at increasing intervals (yearly after the first year). He encourages support group participation by requiring one visit to a support group meeting prior to surgery. He participates in the events at the FACES support group meetings held at MCE.
Dr. Miles does not skimp on risk information. He and his staff try to tell you everything that will occur and everything that could occur. You go into surgery with a great deal of knowledge.
Dr. Miles has experience in WLS and is very competent. His bedside manner is reassuring and I have felt "safe" when in his prescence. His down-to-earth and friendly manner match my personality. Each person should have a surgeon that he/she feel comfortable with.
My first impression of Dr. Miles was that of a Good Ole Country Boy that can cut people open and re-arrange their innards. He was very patient friendly and spent alot of time with us discussing the Pros/Cons of the RNY. Deb in the ins. part was very friendly and gave us tips as to how the ins. co.'s work and what they are looking for. I could not find any thing that really did not like about Dr. Miles and his staff. I am glad that Med Center East is equipted with all the neccessities for MO patients with Bariatric Beds and a trained staff.
I had my first appointment with Dr Miles and was very impressed with his interest and attitude. I let him know I was interested in the lapband. He was very encourging. He explained the surgery and the possible complications. He also explained the differences in the results of the surgery. I had attended a seminar a month before. At that seminar he had stated they had not been able to get an insurance company to pay for the lapband, in fact they had such a hard time with insurance companies they would no longer even apply to them for the lapband. I got the code for the lapband from Dr Miles staff and called the insurance company myself. AT&T, my employer, is self insured with Aetna administering the insurance. When I talked to the insurance company they did not say they would not cover the surgery, they said the Doctors office would have to apply for precertification because he had to prove medical nessecity. I explained this to Dr Miles and he said because AT&T is self insured they may pay for it and they would file for it. He also said I would need a sleep study before the surgery. I am waiting now for both the sleep study and an answer from the insurance company.
