Heaping helpings
on September 23, 2009
A little knowledge can be a painful thing. One August night, April McCafferty stopped at McDonald's for a favorite snack, french fries dipped in Ranch dressing.

Unless you live in a cave — and McCafferty lives above ground on Mount Helix — you know that fries aren't health food. This night, though, she learned a horrifying fact. That Ranch packet? It oozed with 30 percent more fat than the fries.

Food industry giants use labels to fool consumers
on September 22, 2009
Major food corporations are hoping that the average American will cling to catch phrases rather than read food nutrition labels.

First, the awesome refrigerator from "The Jetsons" was "smart." Then, that tiny car next to you on Interstate 75 stopped being ridiculous and became "smart." After that, Glaceau even managed to make water "smart." Now, foods like Froot Loops, mayonnaise and Fudgsicle bars are dubbed "smart," too.

Gastric bypass surgery changed Steve Veale’s life.

Last spring he was a morbidly obese guy with a limp and terrible eating habits. Now he’s a regular-weight man who rides his bike a lot and craves fruit salad.

Veale has lost 63 pounds in four months. Because surgeons sealed off part of his stomach, he can only eat a tiny portion of the rich foods he used to consume. But what amazes him — and still puzzles scientists — is that he doesn’t want to.
