Every Wednesday, Debra Slocum is up to her elbows in pounds of potatoes and mounds of chicken — but for the first time in the busy grandmother’s life, her only interest is in serving them up for the patrons at her Lapeer church’s weekly soup kitchen.

“For the first time in my life, I haven’t felt hungry. I’m Thanksgiving full every day,? said Slocum, 56, who has lost more than 90 pounds since April, when she became one of the region’s first patients to undergo a sleeve gastrectomy at Hurley Medical Center.

Ruling Could Spur Hiring Bias Against Obese Workers

An Indiana state court’s ruling that would require a small business to pay for weight-loss surgery could make employers more cautious when hiring obese people, employment attorneys say.

The Indiana Court of Appeals upheld a workers’ compensation board ruling in August that pizza chain Boston’s The Gourmet Pizza would be required to pay for the weight-loss surgery of a former cook, Adam Childers, after doctors said the procedure was necessary to fix a back injury he suffered on the job in 2007.

World's heaviest man may need airlift

Doctors fighting to save the life of the world's heaviest man are considering calling in an RAF Chinook to move him 150 miles to a specialist centre that will treat him.

Paul Mason, who weighs 70 stone, needs the help of weight-loss doctors and possible surgery to lose tens of stones.

But the treatment will have to take place in Chichester, West Sussex, a considerable distance from his home in Ipswich.

Saving lives through weight-loss surgery

At 24 years old, Jaime Kendall never knew what it was like to ride a roller coaster.

At 5 feet 4 inches and weighing 400 pounds, the Dalton, Ga., resident was too large for the seats. She couldn't watch movies, fly on a plane or fit into traditional school desks because of her size.

"I just never felt full. I ate and ate and kept gaining weight," said Miss Kendall, now 27. "My weight just consumed me. It was all I could think about."
