Group Tackles Discrimination Against Obesity

Many obese Americans are taking part in an online campaign against dieting.

The new movement is being fueled by bloggers who refer to their collective as the “fat-o-sphere?, according to Reuters.

One of those bloggers is 34-year-old Kate Harding of Chicago. Harding, the author of the book “Lessons from the Fat-o-Sphere.? She told Reuters that she spent most of her early life trying different diet schemes, none of which ever seemed to work.

Rising obesity and the weight loss industry: What these trends tell us

It’s no secret that America is experiencing a national obesity epidemic. According to the CDC, in 1985 no state for which the center had data contained an obese population percentage greater than 15%. In 2005-06, the center put the nation’s obesity rate in the low 30s.

Interestingly, the nation’s “weight loss? industry is booming. Marketdata, an independent market research firm, estimated the size of this industry at $59.7 billion in 2007, and forecast 7.7% growth through out 2008. A few decades ago, this industry was non-existent.

There was a time when Don Hess would go to a buffet and really load up his plate.

He loved his own cooking and pretty much everybody else's.
 

And over the course of a few decades, his waistline steadily inflated.

By the time he reached his mid-50s, Hess looked at himself and saw an unhappy, 369-pound man.

"It's one of those things, I think, that it sneaks up on you," he says.

A SYDNEY man who ran his own "Biggest Loser" regime - losing 85kg ¿ now faces a bulging $40,000 bill for body lift surgery to remove excess fat.

After years of obesity and at one point weighing in at 160kg, the 20-year-old Bradbury man decided it was time to shed the kilos.

Over a 12-month period, he underwent a transformation, losing half of his body weight.
