Obesity In Mid-Life Linked To Risk Of Frailty
on May 26, 2009

Obesity among middle-age people increases the risk of illness and death later in life, according to Finnish researchers.

A team of researchers studied more than 1,000 men from age 25 to mid-70s and found that those who were overweight during their 40s followed by a period of weight loss were more susceptible to illness and death as they got older.

Writing in the European Heart Journal, researchers said that while obesity has been linked to risk of heart disease, other studies have shown that being overweight can actually help in situations of heart failure.

Consumption of nuts is not associated with greater weight gain
on May 26, 2009

A study conducted jointly by the University of Navarra and the University of Harvard has confirmed that nut consumption is not associated with greater weight gain.

This was demonstrated by monitoring 51,188 American nurses over eight years (Nurses' Health Study II). Volunteers were between the ages of 20 and 45. Despite the fact that the body weight of women normally increases, explained Maira Bes Rastrollo, principal researcher behind the project, it was shown that those who consumed nuts two or more times a week gained less weight than those who did not.

Obesity Paradox: When Fat Only Seems Healthy
on May 26, 2009

Obese patients with heart disease do better and live longer than leaner patients with the same severity of disease, according to a study published last week in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

The study's authors, from the Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans, refer to fat's seemingly protective effect in this regard as the "obesity paradox."

So surely it must be a good thing that 70 percent of Americans are overweight; this way they can better recover from the heart disease that they likely never would have had if they were thinner.

In Surgery: Caring For A Loved One After Surgery Often Means Loss of Privacy
on May 26, 2009
It's day four after Mom's surgery. The majority of side effects have passed, and things are going well in terms of feeling better. But Mom, Sister and I have all had the same observation: Taking care of a loved one after surgery often means a major loss of privacy for the person being cared for, more than we ever expected.

In the immortal words of my sister, "I haven't seen those parts since I passed through them when she was birthing me, I had hoped to never see them again. Mom is on the same page, she really could have lived happily without ever having her personal bits exposed to either daughter, let alone both.
