'ROSE' Procedure can help gastric bypass patients

Obesity rates are still high in the US

Americans are getting fatter and that could create a health crisis as baby boomers begin to suffer from the health effects of being overweight.

But people of all ages are struggling with obesity.

Fifteen-year-old Maria Clemente and her father Robert are fighting fat with surgery.

"It is a real struggle to do things in general,? Robert said. “Walk up and down the street, sit in a chair, go on airplane, get on a train."

The battle of the bulge is being fought across the country and Americans are losing.

 Almost 80% of patients who undergo gastric bypass surgeries to lose weight show abnormal glucose tolerance when administered a glucose challenge. Some patients are downright hyperglycemic to the point they could be diagnosed as diabetic according to news released at the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery meeting.

With two-thirds of Americans overweight or obese, employers will want to take a hard look at how their companies are financially affected by employees’ weight-related illness and injuries.

According to a report by The Conference Board, a business research group, obese employees cost private employers in this country about $45 billion in medical expenses and work loss each year. Most employers recognize that medical coverage and absenteeism are high for this group because the obese are at increased risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, some forms of cancer, osteoarthritis and a host of other ailments.

THE United States is losing its battle against bulging waistlines, with two-thirds of Americans overweight or obese, according to an annual report.

In the past year, obesity rates rose in nearly half the 50 states and no state had a fall in the number of obese people, according to the F as in Fat report by the Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Foundation researcher studies the fat truth about obesity

Obesity and overweight pose a major risk for chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke, type-2 diabetes, and certain forms of cancer. "Yet, despite the tragedy that surrounds obesity, there is a lack of evidence-based research and funding to better understand the processes at play in weight gain and weight loss," says Dr. Arya Sharma, Professor and Chair in Obesity Research and Management with the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta.
