Lap-Band Surgery Might Bring Out the Worst in Friends and Family
on July 24, 2009
Sabotage! The world brings to mind the grainy flicker of an old war movie, the kind where a small group of determined freedom fighters travel from place to place cutting telephone wires and blowing up chateaux full of partying Nazis.
But while the odds of meeting a real-life World War II saboteur grow smaller every year, those who are seeking to start a new life after having Lap-Band® surgery are almost guaranteed to meet another kind of saboteur: the obesity-recovery saboteur. An obesity patient without the strength of a dedicated Lap-Band support group can suddenly find a “saboteur? has blown a hole in his or her best-laid plans for recovery.

Dealing With the Picky Eater
on July 23, 2009
Many parents have a daily challenge that goes something like this: "My kids are picky eaters." Often, this challenge boils down to their children's tendency to avoid vegetables, but it can include avoidance of numerous other foods - usually the healthy variety. What's the solution? While there really isn't a single easy answer, much of this challenge actually stems from your own relationship with food, meaning that many of your childhood habits have persisted into adulthood and are now being passed on to the next generation.

Movement Is Life
on July 23, 2009
Without movement, there truly is no life, and it's understandable on a purely biological level. Consider this quote from chiropractor James Chestnut, as published in a 2002 article: "Blood cells that don't move cannot transport oxygen, lungs that don't move can't breathe, hearts that don't move can't pump blood, and spines that don't move can't create the motion required for proper joint nutrition, for the activities of daily living, or for the stimulation of the joint-brain pathways required for proper brain and body function." In short, movement is what enables our bodies to operate in all their delicate, wondrous complexity.

Healthy Eating on the Go
on July 23, 2009
We all know eating right can help us stay healthy and live longer. But it's been a busy day. You're beat. How can you get a healthy dinner on the table fast? You could hit the drive-thru and pick up food for the whole family, or stop by the grocery store for a frozen pizza or a prepackaged dinner. Sure, these might be the fastest options, but are they the healthiest? It may depend on what you choose and how often you choose it. Believe it or not, you can eat a balanced, healthy diet even when you're on the go - if you're willing to make your health a priority.

Three Cheers for Vitamin C
on July 23, 2009
Vitamin C is essential for a wide range of metabolic reactions, and it's manufactured internally by plants and animals, which synthesize it from glucose. We humans are a notable exception, which means we need to get vitamin C from food and/or supplements.

Jump-Start Your Metabolism
on July 23, 2009

Metabolism slows with age, thereby contributing to weight gain in our older years. After age 45, the average individual loses around 10 percent of their muscle mass per decade. This equates to losing about one-third to one-half a pound of muscle each year and also gaining that much in body fat.

Sweet excuse: Blame love of calories on cavemen
on July 23, 2009

At first bite, there's a lot to love about the double-deep-fried Mars bar, a beer-battered, sugar-dusted treat that's one of the highlights of this year's Taste of Edmonton.

Served in a white paper cone, the trashy delicacy oozes warm chocolatey goodness out of a chewy, flavourful crust. It is, in the words of Sherwood Park's Karin Monkman, more like a Mars-flavoured cake than a convenience-store candy bar.

Unhealthy appetite: Is 'Fatsploitation' fuelling the obesity crisis?
on July 23, 2009

Fed by weekly magazines and reality TV, hunger for stories about the seriously overweight is insatiable. Is the coverage given to obesity helping to raise awareness – or is it fuelling the problem?

In another life, Barry Austin would be up to his neck in blood and guts fighting for his country in the Afghan badlands or some other far-flung theatre of war. But instead of following his boyhood dream of becoming a professional soldier, Austin selected a different career path. He chose food; lots and lots of food.

After 40 years of diets - why are we fatter than ever?
on July 23, 2009

At home I have a wall of shelves filled with every diet book I've ever read, and some I have even written myself.

It's a collection which represents 40 years of my own interest in slimming and nutrition, and I can sort them into piles: 'bad', 'mad' and 'sad'.

Obese teens go under the knife
on July 23, 2009

THE number of severely obese teenagers undergoing Lap-Band surgery here is increasing, said surgeons.

The surgery involves placing an adjustable band around the upper stomach. The band can be adjusted according to the patient's requirements and removed if needed.

my paper spoke to several surgeons here and most said that they have seen about a 5 to 6 per cent increase in the number of teen patients, compared to five to six years ago.
