Surgery offers bigger weight-loss payoff
on August 18, 2009

Two important patient safety trends have emerged in a Michigan bariatric registry: An intervention to prevent blood clots, a possibly deadly complication, did more harm than good. And a new option that removes most of the stomach -- called sleeve gastrectomy -- is proving to be safe, effective and growing in popularity, though most insurers don't cover it.

?The nerve of some people?
on August 18, 2009

There are a couple of things that you just don’t say to a lady. Never comment on what she’s eating and never, ever make a remark about her weight.

Well I experienced those two “nevers? last week within a day of each other.

First, I was at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic tournament in Washington, D.C. ,last weekend ready to volunteer my time during the annual event.

Actually because I volunteer, I get to see all of the matches that I want for free.

Fat determines who is skinny?
on August 18, 2009
As our society grows, both in girth and population, the obsession with finding a cure for obesity has grown alongside it. While most solutions are thought to be found in products or surgery, scientists are looking inside the human body for part of the answer. In a recent editorial, New Scientist looked at the potential weight loss benefits of brown fat -- a heat-generating tissue that converts extra energy into heat.

Junk Food Can Drain Your Brain and Your Energy
on August 16, 2009
In 1942, nutritionist Victor Lindlahr, who was a strong believer in the idea that food controls health, published You Are What You Eat: How to Win and Keep Health with Diet. Although he wasn’t the first to propose the notion, his work appears to be the vehicle that took the phrase “you are what you eat? into public awareness, and as scientists began to learn more about how food affects the body and mind, the idea took on even more merit. Today, we know that a high-fat diet, consumed long term, can lead to problems such as obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and a decline in cognitive ability, to name a few. But a recent study by researchers at Oxford University shows it may only take a few days for fat-laden food to begin wreaking havoc on our health.

Daniel Oliver: Fighting obesity is best left to the individual
on August 16, 2009

A report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that 65 percent of U.S. adults are overweight and 30 percent are obese. The proportion of those who are obese has doubled in the last decade.

Last week the CDC held a conference in Washington, "Weight of the Nation," (I didn't make that up) to "provide a forum to highlight progress in the prevention and control of obesity through policy and environmental strategies." Thomas Frieden, the CDC's new director, reported, "Obesity and with it diabetes are the only major health problems that are getting worse in this country, and they're getting worse rapidly."

Teenager successfully battles obesity: naturally
on August 16, 2009
SALEM, Ore. - A 16-year-old who successfully fought obesity has a message for kids with the same problem: it’s about making your own choices and not blaming anyone else.

“I have some friends who are trying to lose weight, too,? said Rosa Palomino. “But they kinda blame their parents. In a way, yeah, because your parents didn’t teach you right, but you could always learn.?

At age 13 she weighed 285 pounds and was considered morbidly obese, but over three years she lost 70 pounds without the use of pills or surgery.
