CDC Report: Americans Living Longer, But Not As Long as Everyone Else

With the ongoing health care debate raging across the US, it’s good to know that we lived slightly longer in 2007 than in 2006. According to a report released on August 19th by the Center for Disease Control’s National Center for Health Statistics, Americans reached a new peak in lifespan: 77.9 years. In fact, the last decade has given us a 1.4 year increase in our age at death. Yep, US citizens are living longer than they were just a few years ago, but they still aren’t living as long as almost any other developed country. How can we be getting better but still be lagging behind?

New study: staying even moderately fit may help you live longer

Those who keep even moderately fit while they age may live longer than the out-of-shape, according to a new study.

The study centered on close to 4,400 healthy U.S. adults. It revealed that the roughly 20 percent in the group who had the lowest fitness levels were twice as likely to die over the next nine years as the 20 percent with the next-lowest fitness levels.

Low-carb diet bad for the heart

Researchers say a diet based around lots of protein such as meat, fish and cheese, without carbohydrates, can cause artery damage.

The Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in the US, a part of the Harvard Medical School, found a diet based on low-carbohydrate intake caused artery damage on tests on mice. A low-carb diet has become a popular way to lose weight over recent years, with heavily subscribed plans including the Atkins diet.
