How do we get kids to eat healthier? Should we even try?

Ever since I got pregnant with my first child, I’ve been paying more attention to other parents and kids than I used to. I’m not trying to be judgmental, because I know every family and every child is different, and people will judge me for doing things that I consider perfectly valid, but one of the areas where I do tend to think some parents are crazy revolves around what their children eat.

Tax junk food to cut obesity, says report

ONE of the most detailed investigations into obesity in the US has proposed increasing taxes on junk food and heavily sweetened soft drinks, a move that will be aggressively resisted by the multibillion-dollar beverage industry.

State and local government taxes, as well as credits for companies setting up healthier grocery shops in poor neighbourhoods, are among the proposals aimed at tackling a problem that has become a major drain on health spending.

Sugar lurks where you least expect it

The American Heart Association has issued a new warning to reduce the risk of heart disease: cut back on sugar.

It's the first time the organization has released dietary recommendations for sugars. For years, the association focused on fats while encouraging consumers to "minimize" sugary sweets.

How to get kids to eat healthy

The 14,300 students served by the public school cafeterias in Lee's Summit, Mo., have delicious yet healthy options.
Among the menu items are fresh watermelon, fresh carrots with low-fat ranch dip, baked chicken nuggets, chilled (frozen) strawberries, low-fat mashed potatoes with non-fat gravy, and pizza with whole grain crust and low-fat cheese. They even enjoy roasted, shredded pork sandwiches with homemade whole grain rolls dressed in a low-sodium barbecue sauce — perhaps no surprise for a district that resides in the Kansas City metropolitan area.

Obesity surgery?s benefits extend to next generation

Children born to women who have achieved drastic weight loss through stomach surgery are healthier than children born to severely obese moms, a new study shows. The findings suggest that obesity creates an unhealthy environment for a fetus that has ramifications later on, scientists report in the November Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

Weight-Loss Surgery Breaks Families' 'Obesity Cycle'

Obese mothers have children who are likely to be obese, but a new study concludes that weight-loss surgery can break the cycle.

Researchers found that women who had weight-loss surgery before becoming pregnant had children who were less likely to be heavy when compared with siblings who were born before the weight-loss surgery.

Heart health: low-carb diet best

Cutting kilojoules, whether by trimming fat or carbohydrates, aids weight loss, but the low-carb approach may do a better job of reducing risk factors for heart disease, a new study suggests.

The findings, from a study of 200 overweight adults followed for one year, bolster evidence that moderately low-carb diets may be more effective at cutting certain risk factors for heart disease – like high levels of fats in the blood known as triglycerides, and a large waistline.

Loose skin after weight loss

Many don’t have to worry about this, but for those that lose a lot of weight in a relatively short amount of time. This is an issue many don't think about.  Extreme weight loss (think of the Biggest Loser contestants, or surgical procedures) in a short amount of time is the main culprit of loose skin after weight loss.

Weight-loss Surgery Can Break A Family's Cycle Of Obesity

Adolescent and young children of obese mothers who underwent weight-loss surgery prior to pregnancy have been found to have a lower prevalence of obesity and significantly improved cardio-metabolic markers when compared to siblings born before the same obese mothers had weight-loss surgery. This new study has been accepted for publication in The Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM).
