Question:
Anyone have gestational diabetes during pregnancy after obesity surgury?
My glucose tolerance test came back with a level of 209. I have to go in for futher evaluation but am wondering if anyone has had gestational diabetes after obesity surgury? I had my surgury 1 year ago and lost 100lbs. I am only about 50lbs from my ideal weight and have not gained any weight during this pregnancy and I am now 28 weeks pregnant. Could anyone enlighten me? — darcee V. (posted on May 11, 2001)

I had gestational diabetes with 2 pregnancies. I had not had the bypass
surgery at the time. This has been 22 years ago. I was not particularly
overweight, chubby but not obese at the time. I lost weight carring both
babies, and when you have the gestation you give birth to large babies. My
first I lost 22 pounds during carring and she weighed in at 9.2. The birth
was hard but not unbearable. The second was the worse. I was 30 years old
at the time. I lost 26 pounds carring her and she weighed in at 13 pounds,
24" in length. I was not big enough to give birth viginaly, but my
doctor saw fit to make me do it anyway and she got lodged inside me. Her
little arm and her head was out and then got stuck. I had 4 nurses pushing
on my belly and the doctor pulling on her little arm and the forceps around
her head, he was pulling and broke her little arm and her collar bone. She
was pretty messed up. I lost a lot of blood, and almost lost me and the
baby. But back 22 years ago the technology was not as sophisticated as it
is now. I got 3 pints of blood, and live to tell about it. Im not sure how
they treat gestation now but im sure the take care of you better than they
did me. Make sure that they do. I had a tubaligation, didn't want to give
birth anymore. The doctor makes a difference in the care that you receive.
Take care. You'll do fine.

I am one year post op and almost 6 months pregnant. I had gestational
diabetes 10 years ago when I had my Daughter. She was 12 and a half pounds
and 24" long by c section. The diabetes went away right after she was
born. Then came back a few years later. I was diabetic for about 5 years
then I had my wls surgery and it went away almost immediately!! So far it
hasnt creeped back yet. The most significant affect on your blood sugar is
your carbohydrate intake keep it VERY LOW and this helps your blood sugar
to stay low. I did Atkins to keep my #'s down in the past and may have to
do it again!
