Question:
Can taking too many vitamins cause breakdown in staple line?

This may sound like a really dumb question but, recently I have switched from taking centrum to another vitamin that I bought at Cosco. It is a high energy pak and multi-vitamin that includes everything that centrum has and more. They come in individual packets and have around 6 or 7 pills in each packet. I can't swallow everything at once but, if I take it slowly I have no problem. I was just wondering if taking so many pills at once can cause breakdown in staple line. My nutritionist knows that I switched vitamins and told me that if it doesn't bother my stomach than I could go ahead. I just don't want to do anything that might cause problems afterwards. Any input would be appreciated.    — Jodie R. (posted on March 17, 2000)

Hi Jodie, the nutritionist is right, vitamins should not harm the suture line at all. And don't worry about taking a few vitamins at a time. It is probably better to take the pills one at a time anyway. I heard that taking a whole handful of pills at once can cause a bit of stomach upset. Also, make sure that these vitamins will not interact with any other medications you may be taking (if any). Some pills are best taken on an empty stomach, some with citrus juice, some with or without food. We tend to think of vitamins differently than prescription drugs, but just be sure whatever you take is compatable!!

Jodie-I would not waste my time or nutriton with any compressed vitamins. Many of them do not disolve and are so heat treated that they lose their value. They are a false sense of security. I would opt for any chewable or better yet liquid including sublingual or effeversent. These are all available if you look around and spend a bit more money. In the long run you will have a better benefit. I do some of my shopping at www.vitaminshoppe.com. Good Luck to you I do not think that I am aware of any vitamins that may break to staple line.

Swallowing pills can cause complications from the fillers nd binders or from the possibility of becoming lodged. With the low absorption, if any absorption, with pills, many bariatric patients and doctors have switched to sprays. With oral absorption out preforming even an injection, sprays are the future of nutrition. We will be exhibiting at the annual meeting of the ASBS again this year.
